with Big Basin Peak  Sucess!

Got to the Old Hyndman saddle in 3.5 hours. Dropped my pack and made the quick side trip to Big Basin Peak. During that I realized I came with the false notion that I couldn't make a (lollipop) loop with the 2 peaks. After Old Hyndman I climbed up and over point 11442 a second time just so I could descend via the east side of Big Basin and experience more of the area.

It was Labor Day weekend so the parking lot was packed, but I didn't see a soul off of the main trail- well, except from the summit there were plenty of people to be seen and heard in Hyndman Basin.

Best. Scramble. Ever.  Sucess!

First, camping in Big Basin was AMAZING... The best camp spot I've ever had. As for the route, it was awesome. My girlfriend climbed the Black Rock Dike, while I ventured out onto the east/southeast face. Plenty of adventure on the way up... It definitely had my attention!

One for the money  Sucess!

Dragged out one of my buddies for this one. He almost bailed out at the black rock dike but found the courage to climb on up. Big Basin is an amazing area and I would have loved to explore more, but we had to get home.

Long, long day  Sucess!

Long approach but a great climb. Took us about 12hrs, but it was a nice ending to my tripple crown...one at a time.

Long ago  Sucess!

Back in the day. The Black Rock Dike makes this a memorable climb and clearly marks the trail.

cool scramble  Sucess!

The Black Rock Dike made for a fun little scramble. Cloudy day with showers in the area but at least there was no smoke. Saw a couple of people over on Hyndman but otherwise lots of solitude. The summit register is worth checking out.

East Ridge via Big Basin  Sucess!

A long but beautiful day in the Pioneers. A storm had dumped nearly a foot of snow earlier in the week, so the going was pretty slow from about 10500' and higher. Got to the summit block and the "black rock dike" was full of ice that was covered in unconsolidated snow, so it was a little tricky in places. Here’s a write up and some photos.

South East Face  Sucess!

Steep fun climb from Wild Horse Canyon, planned to do it as a rope of 2 but my pard wasn't healed up enough from a shattered Femur, Solo'd up the face to about 110' below summit and hit the ridge, Scary descent down another route.

Solitude and Beauty  Sucess!

Fantastic climb: high alpine lakes, meandering creeks, a fun scramble to the top, great views, and nobody else around. After leaving the Hyndman Creek trail we didn't see anyone in the Cobb/Old Hyndman Basin. Definitely a better climb than its taller, younger namesake.

We tried to climb this peak the day before, but there was a house stuck in the road just past Triumph. The wheels on the trailer broke and the whole house looked like it was going to fall off the road (too bad it didn't). The pre-made home ended up near the tennis courts near that glass house on the hill.

What a peak.  Sucess!

Another Pioneer peak. Definitely one of the most scenic places I've been. This climb is a great combination of solid rock, beautiful vistas and some steep scrambling.

Route Climbed: Black Rock Dike Date Climbed: September 30th/05  Sucess!

This is a beautiful, albeit long, climb. The Black Rock Dike had quite a bit of loose rockfall in it which surprised me but as I found out at the top, a large group of inexperienced kids from a local school had climbed it a few days prior to me.

This completed the Pioneer Triumvirate for me....except, of course not all in one day.
