Most mountains in the Southeast have forested summits and forested trails almost every step of the way. There may be an outcrop or an overlook here or there, and there are several exceptions to the general pattern, but that pattern does typically hold.
Old Rag is a standout for its open, rocky summit and its ridgeline, the latter of which offers many unrestricted views across the Blue Ridge and the Piedmont. And the standout features on Old Rag are probably its granite boulders large and small, serving the interests of playful kids, scramblers, and serious boulderers alike. It is a special place unlike any other mountain in Virginia.
Feel free to add any of your own Old Rag boulder/outcrop pictures. Especially welcome would be shots showing scramblers and boulderers in action-- not people posed atop rocks but people in action.
