Old World Swallowtail

Old World Swallowtail

The Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon) The number of these butterflies has been decreasing with each year in the Low Beskid. They are considered one of the most beautiful and striking. At lower elevations there are usually two broods of them in a year, one from May to June and the other from August to September. Mature swallowtail lives just a few weeks and dies after lying eggs. Lovely!

Swallowtails have such a graceful flight. It looks completely effortlees. They seldom seem to land on lower plants and it's hard to take a good picture of them most of the time.
I love the sharpness and colors in your photo. Excellent job!

Re: Lovely!

You are right. I was able to photograph them only once last year even though I could see them much more often. Thank you for the comment and vote. Greetings Henryk

Very striking...

There must be several species that are
closely related. In the western US, the
larvae or catapillars feed on the leaves
and stems of willows and aspen.

A perfect specimen!

I had the luck of seeing a beautiful one last summer in the Salzkammergut - only it's right wing was injured...
