A sketch of the route up the lower headwall of Swamp Creek.

Note: It is best to swing right out into the open area next to the creek to get a look at the left side before commiting to it. A little visual goes a long way here. On the left side is a gap through the heavy brush consisting of hip-high sticker bushes. At its end go left up a gully-like slope between brush. The pseudo-gully is modestly brushy with talus exposed. It is easy to work up through. You are aiming for the taller trees higher up the slope. Once you get high enough you will come even with the slanting rock wall. You can go up the toe of this slanting rock wall (Class 3/4 with good green belays) or go farther up to make a steep, brushy traverse rightward to above the rock toe. From there on to the upper basin it is merely steep forest but still steep enough to warrant concentration.
