On The Prowl

This Red-Tail Hawk, I think it is, was looking for breakfast. The second she saw me stop the car she took off. Smart bird, I could have been a hunter.

sweet...

catch Marc...spoiled living on the Bow River in the Canadian Rockes, observing balds, ospreys and horned owls.. diving right in front of us, teaching young how to hunt, etc...my backyard now mostly consists of a very unusual treat, for us anyway, a Northern Harrier...low flying, right by our windows...no doubt adapting a flight path behind our homes looking for small birds and critters eating off of our plants...can't see how I will ever get a photo of it though, cheers

Thanks Dow,

I wish I knew my birds as well as you do.
Catching birds in flight is only by luck.
I nearly caught an eagle in flight last weekend, but my stupid camera jammed, again. It was sitting by the side of the road and as I drove around the corner it took flight. By the time I stopped and got the camera it had gotten 40-50 feet. Then my camera jammed. By the time I got it working again, it had gone behind the ridge. Then I saw it coming back for part of a circle. I was able to get two shots as it was going away from me. They are both fuzzy. It was huge, and I looked for a road kill, or why it was sitting by a mountain road. There was nothing. I wonder if it's possible that it was stocking something even from the ground!
Thanks Dow, for checking out my first, and probably the only, bird in flight pic.
Marc
p.s. Good luck with that northern Harrier.

A beautiful bird! And you captured it absolutely masterly!
Knowing just how difficult that is - congratulations!!
Cheers,

Re: Beautiful!

Thank you Eric, I was lucky to catch this guy and have my camera handy. I took three photos at full zoom, I think, 105mm. He knew I was looking at him and he took off like a rocket.

Re: Beautiful!

Right on!! I can assure you it was a frustrating game trying to get good shots already of the alpine choughs on the Untersberg - they just wouldn't be "predictable"! ;-)
