Thank you. I'm not sure which descent you mean? There is a big gap between the backside of Mescalito proper and the rest of the ridge. Supposedly there is a 'shortcut' into the south fork of Pine Creek that most likely heads straight down from the peak without climbing back to the ridge, but I'm not familiar with it.
We climb back to the ridge and descend the class 3 chute by a windblown tree. You cannot miss the tree, it is very peculiar looking and visible even from the very bottom of the canyon. You can see the chute and the tree in photo 83 in this slideshow, this is looking back at the ridge : Mescalito. This route is class 3, but long and I imagine it might feel even longer with heavy rock climbing gear. I hope this helps.
