The definative guide to bouldering in North Wales
As far as I know this is the only guidebook in Wales totally dedicated to bouldering, so it's a good thing that the book is absolutely superb. It has over 1000 problems ranging right across the difficulty spectrum. It uses the US V system of grading rather than the British technical or Fontainebleau gradings, which may frustrate some. Although it does have a conversion table for the V and F systems it ignores the British system completely, this isn't really much of an issue though. Each problem is given a grade and a short description, which are on occasion brief, but do manage to include all the important pointers.

Although most photographs, topos and diagrams are printed in black and white, they are all of an excellent quality, and are displayed clearly, logically and neatly. Another nice feature of the book is that it is printed bilingually in both English and Welsh. Although this translation is of little use to most people, even as a Welsh speaker I prefer to read in English, it’s a nice touch and helps give the book a real connection with the area it covers.

My main criticism is that the book doesn't cover a large enough geographical area. It is mostly concerned with the Nant Perris and Nant Ffrancon areas, and although there is a section on outlying areas, the section isn't nearly detailed enough. This is probably down to the fact that the outlying areas are less explored than those around the main hub of Snowdonia's climbing area, and I'm sure in time, as newer editions of the book are published, more routes in the outlying areas will be included.

All in all this is a very good book and an essential for anyone who is serious about bouldering in North Wales.
