What Are They?
Spotting scopes are low powered telescopes for use in the wilderness. Many of these are waterproof so can be brought with you on a trip involving entering water. Their magnifications is usually changable for different views.
How much resolution there is depends on the diameter of the objective lens. The larger the lens, the greater the resolution. However, that also makes it more heavier and less convienient for trips into the mountains and forests. They are also more expensive as the lens grows. Try balancing the two ends for one that suits you the best.
If it doesn't already come with one, buy a tripod. These will help greatly by reducing shake and will let you observe you subject whether it's an animal, plant or manmade object.
