This little volume combines a natural history of the San Gabriel Mountains with an orientation to survival skills in the mountains. The author, who has explored the San Gabriels since childhood, begins with the geology of these mountains, including the prominence of earthquake faults in their structure, and also covers the animals and plant life peculiar to this range. A chapter is devoted to how the native Gabrielino Indians used the plants found in these mountains for food and medicinal purposes.

Nyerges devotes considerable attention to navigation skills in the forest, and to survival skills such as making fire, finding water, and general safety and first aid considerations. The book is well written and contains a lot of good practical advice, both for the novice and for the more experienced outdoors devotee.

Despite the subtitle, this book is not a guide to hikes in the Angeles National Forest, although this in no way detracts from the value of its content.
