The Viper has superb clearance on vertical and steep ice, so there is little risk of bashing knuckles.

The hourglass grip provides fantastic control, and the pinky rest stops you getting pumped. When combined with the Android leash it makes removing bits of gear much easier, and mixed climbs a lot easier. It also means you can climb leashless if you wish.

The picks are amazing, and will sink deep into hard ice. The picks are also interchangeable with any picks of the Black Diamond range

I've had these axes for a couple of seasons now, and have used them on every thing from over hanging ice, to long alpine routes. I can't fault anything about these axes they are truly amazing.

A fine pair of ice tools
First time I had these in my hands was when I borrowed them, just to see how they compared to my own axes. It was on a short frozen waterfall, WI 4. Compared to my own tools (Petzl Aztar), it took much less effort to place them - one gentle swing was often enough.

Later I bought a pair myself. I still haven't used them on any waterfalls, but they performed excellent on a lot of Alpine routes.
