Ahead of the galeWeather was balmy, clear, and warm, but advisory winds were forecast for the afternoon. I reached the summit at 1:00 just as the first puffs of wind could be felt. By the time I reached the bottom, a full gale was blowing in the valley. Too windy to even use hiking poles!

2nd Time AroundNice day, a fortunate cool weather window. I was able to climb Grapevine, Palmer, and Pahrump Point in the space of a few days. Temps are going back up soon.

27 Peaks in 21 DaysPahrump was not the quality route I was hoping for, too much loose rock and scree. But it was very nice once we reached the summit ridge. We did have several ravens doing carwheels around us on the summit. Overall I'd say the best this about the peak is the view of it from the west. This was part of a 21 day hiking road-trip I did with Heather. Other peaks on this trip include:
Pinos, Sawmill, Aliso, Signal, Castle Dome, Ajo, Miller, Superstition BM, Turtle HP, Old Woman, Granite, Cinder Cone 3894', Avawatz, Pinto, Nelson HP, Panamint Butte, Canyon Point, Shadow, Grapevine, Wahguye, Palmer, Stirling, Northshore, Black Mesa, Hamblin, and Little Virgin.
We also visited Heiroglyphic Canyon, Marble Canyon, Cottonwood Canyon, Sheep Spring Canyon, Cadiz Dunes, Mojave Lava Tube, Parowan Gap Dinosaur tracks and numerous pertroglyph sites.

Ticks and a Great SummitA fun climb, especially the summit ridge line. Although I didn't pick up any, Lorraine flicked off three ticks during the course of the climb. In February, no less.

from the highway in Chicago ValleyThis peak is an excellent scramble with great views from the summit. Laid out below me to the northeast was the town of Pahrump, with snow-capped Charleston Peak behind it in the distance. Eagle Mountain (another great scramble) appears as a lone island in the desert to the northwest. Total of about 8 miles and 3,350 feet vertical from the pullout on the highway. Of course, after the hike, I had to drive to the nearby town of Shoshone for dinner at the Crowbar.
P.S. -Don't forget to pose for a photo with the plywood wedding couple at the end of the dirt road. Unfortunately, the groom had already lost his head by the day I was there.

Standard DPS routeClimbed with the Siberian and the Persian.
The route description here is good. I wouild add that the two upper "notches" are really defined by small rock (~10') protuberances on the left side, as one ascends, and the "saddle" is more of a quasi-level point on the ridge. The route is essentially class 2, with the loose chute as the most dangerous part ("dangerous" as in "getting a rock knocked on your head").
We also just wanted to stay on top for a long time.

Route Climbed: from Chicago Valley Date Climbed: May 8, 2005The 3400 feet of gain went very quickly - not sloggy in the slightest (unusual for a desert peak with that kind of gain). Didn't wanna leave the summit. Curious birds kept doing surprisingly close fly-bys, checking me out.
It's really hard to articulate what made this peak so enjoyable. Just a true desert mountain, I guess - rugged as hell and beautiful.
