Cool name

Where did the name Panther come from? Is there a story behind that? :D

Re: Cool name

Panther Creek on the north. Roper doesn't like Beckey's names for these peaks (Ragged Ridge), especially since Roper is claiming the FA of one of them. I don't really have a preference, and therefore give creedence to both of these guys.

Re: Cool name

Ah, I see. I'll add that to the Mesahchie page then. Which peak did Roper make the FA on?

Re: Cool name

It seems the Fireys/Meulemans named it Panther Peak back in 1966. See here. Although, naming a summit after the name of a nearby creek is a rather prosaic way to go about things. Albeit, "panther" is an appropriate word to describe this dangerous/precipitous peak.

Roper has FA of Katsuk Peak along with ex-wife Chris Roper in 1968. See info in same link above a little farther down the page. I'm not sure if he and Chris were married at the time. They named it Mt. Holyoke for Chris's alma mater. My reason for giving both Roper and Beckey creedence is because of this Holyoke name. Holyoke, either the college or the town on the East Coast, has nothing to do with this peak other than the connection through his ex. Plus, it goes counter to Roper's predilection to use indian names or quasi-indian names for his toponyms. Yet, this is something that Beckey very much did by using Chinook jargon words, whether they were justifiable or not. To put it in a nutshell, I think Holyoke doesn't work for this peak's name, that Katsuk (meaning "center") is better, though itself not all that interesting. All of the peaks on Ragged Ridge should have like-styled names. At least Beckey had this in mind.

Peak naming is not always easy. I've named a few. Some unnamed peaks I don't care to name.

Re: Cool name

Awesome history, it's great to have such musings linked here. Amazing that it wasn't ascended until 1968! Roper got a good one there...
