Overview

Pico Humboldt is the second highest mountain in Venezuela. This mountain is easy to climb. If you go the normal route you have to cross a glacier but you will cross it in 15 minutes. It is not steep. For the rocks you will need your hands but it is not really climbing.
If you climb to the top on the north-west side the glacier is much steeper and longer. It is more interesting.
I think not so many people climb this mountain. I did it in march 2002 and I was alone with my partner.

Getting There

There are several ways to climb the mountain. In my opinion the best way is to go from Merida with a jeep in 20-30minutes to the entrance of the Sierra Nevada National Park. The entrance is in "La Mucuy" (2130mts.). From there you go through tropical forest, cloud forest and bamboo forest to Lagoon Coromoto (3200mts.). Next day you go to Lagoon Verde (4000mts.). From here you start the north-west route at the next day. If you want go the normal route I would suggest that you go to Lagoon El Suegro (4200mts.). It is a walk of 1 hour more. But it is easier the next day to climb to the top. After climbing to the top go the same way back or go the Traverse to Pico Bolivar. Information about that see at the page of Pico Bolivar.

Red Tape

For the permit and fee see the page of Pico Bolivar.

When To Climb

The best season is the dry-season (November-April). It is also possible to climb in the rain-season, but you will have more rain and snow.

Camping

You can camp everywhere. There are no restrictions. Only take your waste with you down to Merida. You will find many Lagoons or small rivers for water. You can drink it without problems.

Mountain Conditions

If you need equipment or a guide you should contact Stephan in Merida. He can help you with the organization for a trip to the Venezolan Andes.
