Overview

The Montgo (national park) certainly stands out from the regions other mountains, being an isolated rocky ridge on the coast between Denia and Javea (also written as Xabia) with a close resemble to a sleeping elephant. You could imagine the 752 meters heigh summit as its great head. With the exception of the Sierra Bernia, it is probably the most popular mountain on the Costa Blanca.

As might be expected, being so isolated, the summit gives excellent views, not only of the coast, but also to the inland peaks, on a clear day Ibiza and to the west, on the northern summit, where a cross commemorating an aircraft disaster in 1938.
The reasons which justified the declaration of Montgó as a Natural Park (date of declaration as a NP: 16th of March 1987)
are not human and physical, but rather basic and fundamentally, environmental and botanical causes. This is a natural area which harbours a great wealth of flora. Over 600 species, among which some unique in their genus, complete the floral catalogue.

Starting Point

Drive on the road from Javea to Denia, the CV 736, and turn west towards the mountain at Km. 2.5, to follow an unsurfaced road for about one kilometer, ignoring a track at your right-hand which leads you to a shooting club. When you reach the notice board for the natural park, find a place to park for you vehicle.
(see map in route section)

Routes

A broad track heads Nort-West towards the mountain until the track ends and you join a distinct trail which will take you right to the summit via the North East face of the mountain.
The path levels a little to pass under the cliffs, then steepens in shorter zig-zags to gain height until you leave the track to take the rock for the final up the arete. There is no path but there are a couple of red markers to keep you on course.. When you doubt, just head upwards. Follow a small ledge on the southern side of the rocks which goes directly to the main summit.
For an extensive route discription and map, see the routesection Montgo Traverse from Javea / Xabia

When to climb

You can climb Montgo the whole year but during the spring the flower bordered tracks are a riot of pinks, purples, yellows and whites. The vegetation is made up mainly of low growing shrubs but is sprinkled with heather, lavender, rosemary, miniature palms and juniper bushes. Despite its proximity to the bustling coastline of the Costa Blanca, it survives as a ecological enclave and home to wild boar, genets, lizard, foxes together with birds of prey and some pelagic seabirds.
The weather can change in a blink of an eye in this erea so always bring yourself warm (rain / wind) clothes and enough water and food.
In Fall and winter the weather on the Northside can change in a minut and transform the area in a cloudy and misty scenary. Bring GPS or compas and warm clothes!

Red Tape

The Montgo is a protected area. To contribute to its conservation, make the least noise possible, respect the animals and plants and do not drop litter or other traces of your visit.

Getting there

The El Altlet International Airport, just 10km (6 mi) from Alicante's city centre, has flights from major European cities such as London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Dusseldorf and Rome as well as domestic destinations like Madrid, Barcelona and Ibiza.
