OverviewCastle Dome Peak is located in the Castle Dome Mountains. These rugged mountains are encompassed by the Kofa National Wildlife Refuge about 45 miles northeast of Yuma. Castle Dome Peak has a spire-like appearance when viewed from certain angles, and is a classic desert peak. It can be seen for miles around, and is a key desert landmark. The refuge encompasses 665,400 acres of pristine desert. The Castle Dome and nearby Kofa Mountains dominate the refuge landscape, and rise sharply above the surrounding desert plains. The Yuma Proving Ground is located adjacent to the refuge.
With a lowly elevation of 3,788', Castle Dome Peak ranks way down on the Arizona elevation list. But the new field of Prominence has made Castle Dome Peak a more important mountain. With a prominence of 2,088', it's just big enough to make an appearance on the Arizona Prominence Map.
Getting ThereFrom Yuma, drive northeast on US 95 for about 35 miles. Take a right at the Castle Dome Mine Road, which is a good dirt road. Drive north on this road for about ten miles to a mining museum. Continue past the mine on a worsening dirt road. This section of road will require a high clearance vehicle. Continue on this road for about five miles as it winds around to the west side of Castle Dome Peak. Slightly northwest of the peak itself, you will come to a prominent wash with a sign indicating no motor vehicles. Park here.
