The San Juans: A Range of Character

The San Juan Mountains is a continuous though twisted range that has been broken up into sections, or sub-ranges for the sake of simplicity ever since man first set foot in them. To say "I was in the San Juans" narrows it down for knowledgeable folks to about 10,000 square miles. So the sub-ranges serve their purpose well. Without getting too specific, "I was in the La Garitas," helps just a bit.

The San Juan sub-ranges also reflect the immense diversity of this sprawling mountain range. Some ranges feature alpine plateaus, others are gentle mounds and others still are jagged spires.

This album illustrates the character of each of the San Juan sub-ranges and is primarily for your viewing pleasure, but for informational purposes, be sure to check out the captions by clicking on the photos. Some of my own archival photos are mixed in with photos from fellow SP members. This album is also a photo component of the San Juan Range Appendix B.
