Overview

This is a unique page and a new concept for SP. This type of page should be the exception, not the norm, as the nature of information on SP is about informing hikers and climbers on how to get to and execute a route. This page is slightly different. It informs the reader on how to get to the route in a roundabout fashion. It does not inform you on how to execute the route, let alone which route!

Why? What purpose does such a page serve?

Well, it’s good if you’re up for a challenge and want to test your sleuthing and orienteering skills. If you’re intrigued, read on!

There are places in this world that need to be kept secret, for a wide variety of reasons. These are the special places, the nooks and crannies of nature we know about and love so much that we’re selfish enough to keep them to ourselves. And that’s okay. The entire world does not need to be posted on SP.

But every now and then you come across a place that is special enough that you want to share it with those who deserve it…in other words, share it with those who are willing to work for the privilege of experiencing that special place.

So it is with this page. If you’re willing to do some research, and then follow that up with some travel to a far away land, and then be willing to hike in the desert wilderness looking for that proverbial needle in the haystack, then you’ve come to the right place!

The Challenge

Capitol Reef National Park is located in south central Utah, on the vast Colorado Plateau, a great desert in the middle of nowhere. The Park is a contorted maze of rock. Canyons, arches, spires, pinnacles and balanced rocks occupy this narrow barrier of stone than runs in a line due north from Lake Powell for 100 miles. Somewhere amongst this collection of bizarre eroded wonders is this stunning formation:

Unnamed Arch, Capitol Reef NP

There are two parts to the challenge.

1. Do your research here on SP. Many clues are provided to get you started.

2. This is the tougher part. Get yourself to Capitol Reef National Park and find this rock formation.

I did this very exercise myself, so I know it can be done, and I did it with only a photograph and a bad caption. You are armed with much more information here on SP. Be sure to check out ALL material posted on SP concerning Capitol Reef National Park, including most of the photos and their captions. By doing so, you’ll be armed with much more knowledge than I had, and your chances at success will be greater than mine were.

If you are successful, remember to take a picture of the rock formation, preferably at the same angle as the picture above, with Ferns Nipple visible through the opening. When you return, post the photo to this page as evidence of your success. This will be a rare situation on SP where duplicate photos are essential!

My guess is that it will be a very long time before this challenge is answered and met with success, but I’ve been proven wrong before by some intrepid SP members. It will be interesting to see how long the challenge goes unanswered.

PLEASE, post only pictures of the arch to this page. Do not post detailed accounts of your experience! I would enjoy reading your account via email. We want to maintain the mystery of the challenge for those that follow. Thanks!

The Reward

If you see all of the clues here at SummitPost, you’ll know what the reward will be. Hopefully this endeavor is worth it to you in the end! It was for us! Good luck!
