Cotton-grass

There are about 20 species of cotton-grass, occurring chiefly in the cooler parts of the Northern Hemisphere, always in wet places. The name is from the Greek erion, wool or cotton, and phoros, bearing, referring to the cottony flower heads.

Look for the various species of cotton-grass at swamps, marshes and the shores of subalpine lakes in the mountains or tundra of the far north. If you are in a area with lots of cotton-grass, you are in a nice place, but your feet are probably wet.

Please submit your cotton-grass photos, there are some good ones on SP.
