North Coyote Buttes is most famous for a sandstone bowl called the Wave, which is striated in such a way that it looks like the rock has been threaded through a taffy candy machine. Some areas of the wave have brilliant yellow and red hues with perfect undulating horizontal curves. North Coyote Buttes can be brutally hot in the summer with little refuge from shade, so most try to visit during the spring or fall, but I usually end up there in the winter. Due to a European movie that was filmed at the Wave some time ago the area is much more popular with them than it is with Americans. Many rock formations in the area have been given names by visitors, but the entire area around the popular "Wave", is still the Wave.
