OverviewOne of a few, lower summits in the Sawtooth Ridge area of the northernmost High Sierra, this peak offers a great ski climb and descent. The less steep slopes mean decreased levels of avalanche danger, and thusly safer to ski or snow climb. The top gives a superb vista of Sawtooth Ridge to the eastsoutheast, and the whole area including Bridgeport Valley and the ranges to the north and east.
Getting ThereTake U.S. 395 to Bridgeport, CA. On the north side of town, a signed, paved road leads southwest toward Twin Lakes Resort (13 miles). Upon reaching the lower end of the first lake, turn left (south) and proceed to the vicinity of the Lower Twin Lakes Campground. The trailhead, at 7,100’, is on the left (east) side of the road. This gives access to the entire north and east slopes of Crater Crest. Basically, though, the North Ridge or Slope is the one to take up. It’s some 4,300’ gain to the top, over 3.5 miles as the crow flies.
The chief obstacle after leaving the trail is the stream, Tamarack Creek, that drains out of Tamarack Lake (9,600+). This may be clogged with aspen trees. Otherwise, it’s a straight shot to the top. It's class 1 terrain all the way.
Red TapeThe peak area is adjacent to the Hoover Wilderness, in the Toiyabe National Forest. No wilderness permit is required. There are no huts, or fees. The trail and area seem to be lightly used.
CampingThere’s plenty of campgrounds along the Twin Lakes Road, with lodging in the Twin Lakes Resort, Bridgeport, and also communities up and down U.S. 395.
