August 2004 on Mount RainierThese pictures are a combination of shots from all members of the climbing party. Robert Ricks (formerly known as "Chuckwagon6"), Broderick Christoff, and Jason Dryden came together for a sponsored "Climb for Family Readiness". I was facing a deployment to Iraq and my wife headed up our unit's Family Readiness Group. We received sponsorship for a fund-raising effort based on altitude gained. The money could only be earned from Camp Schurman and above. In other words we had to achieve higher elevation than Camp Schurman to receive credit for altitude gained. The idea was to enforce a summit bid.
We knew the good weather was short-lived and we were racing against the clock. A forecasted storm front was forcing our effort a day earlier than planned. Our inexperience as a team showed in a late start and relatively slow progress. We made 13,000 feet before being decisively turned around by weather. The retreat was a windy and rain-soaked mini-epic. All of us learned a lot of lessons that day.
