Hike from North Crestone LakeOn July 4 2008 we hiked in to the drainage of North Crestone Lake and set up camp. Later on that afternoon a couple came by and said there were 4 people up at the lake smoking cigarettes and shooting a gun. The guy said that he'd heard a bullet whiz by his head. Later on we went up to the lake and found clumps of 4 cigarette butts scattered along the trail at various points. There were 4 caucasians shooting a gun. They stood looking at us for quite a while, maybe 10 minutes, from about 500 yards away. It was a little creepy knowing that the guy who'd spoken to us earlier had a bullet fly past his head.
The next day we climbed Mt Adams by heading up towards the lake from the trail and then crossing the stream near where it flowed out of the lake. We stayed high above the lake on the right side of the lake eventually making the saddle. From the saddle we scrambled up the slabs which were pretty good climbing. The route up from the saddle was pretty steep.
The route goes up left from the saddle. It was beautiful rock. Rock fall danger was there. We set a few off that went a long way. I set one off that hit Rachel in the hand.
It wasn't so steep you'd worry about falling, but we accidentally set a few rocks in motion that fell for about 1,000' before they stopped. It took about 2 1/2-3 hours to get there from our camp which was about 30 minutes below the lake.
The people on top of Challenger are barely visible at the maximum scale. |
