2nd SP Gathering in the San Juans a BIG Success!

Nineteen people turned out for the second summer SP gathering in the San Juan Mountains, making this the most successful summer gathering yet. Our climb of Grand Turk and the Sultan just south of Silverton went very well, with 17 folks climbing both mountains, all 19 climbing Grand Turk and a compliment of climbers also climbing a ranked twelver nearby.

A hiking group and regular SP lurkers known as the Usual Suspects participated in this event. There were eight in this group, there were two CMC (San Juan Chapter) members and the rest were SP members.

The group met for dinner the evening prior to the climb, and after the climb, enjoyed some brew at the Silverton Brewery as well as a fabulous dinner at the Bent Elbow on "nortorious" Blair Street. A great time was had by all!

Folks that participated in this fantastic outing are encouraged and will likely contribute photographs to this album collection in the near future. My thanks to everyone who attended for making this event the huge success that it was!

Thanks Aaron for setting up another great summer gathering in the San Juans! It was a lot of fun, and the weather was just perfect. It was great meeting everyone, and seeing those of you I met last year again!
Just some thoughts from the climbs... I really enjoyed both Grand Turk and Sultan, their position in the range allows for some of the best views of the Grenadiers I have ever seen. The "bonus peak" we did, unnamed PT 12849, was a great peak as well. Very gentle, covered in beautiful wildflower meadows and with outstanding views back to Sultan and Grand Turk.
Aaron, good call on Cinnamon Pass, the road was drier than I expected after that afternoon squall, but better yet the clouds were breaking up as I neared the the pass so I went up Cinnamon Mtn and got some great sunset shots!
See you all next summer, but hopefully sooner!

It was wonderful to see all of you and meet many of you for the first time. I will post my pics soon, I promise.

Deb and I decided instead of a wildflower hike Sunday morning to summit Red Mountain #1 before checking out of our hotel.

My favorite quote of the trip
Someone, upon seeing several of the formerly grungy mountain ladies freshly showered and groomed at restaurant: "Wow, you guys turned into girls."

Weather, mountains, and friends old and new all conspired to make it a phenomenal day in the San Juans. What a great group of people! Can't wait to do it again next year. Aaron, Alan, tell me what I can do to help make that happen.

All of the elements converged to make this a wonderful experience, including good friends, perfect weather, outstanding planning, and most of all one of the most beautiful mountain areas I have ever visited.

I'm already looking forward to next year's event!

Good to see that the greater (...reaching at least as far as Oklahoma City) CO-SP crew gets out together! Great photos as usual.
