So, why are the rocks red?

Abutting the southern edge of the Colorado Plateau, these landforms are red simply due to RUST.
Originating from the ancestral Rocky Mountains, a very thin layer of oxidized iron coats each grain of quartz sand in these
colorful sandstone formations surrounding Sedona, Arizona.

Clouds over Cathedral

Over time, Eye Candy becomes very sandy!

Just a very small amount of iron oxide can produce vivid colors in soils and
rocks.
Although RED is the most common color, not all iron oxides are red.
Some are brown, yellow, black or even green - like some person's eyes.

Crumby and easily erodible, the formations you see here will eventually
SURRENDER to the sands of time.

WARNING ... WHILE these blazing rock images may resemble FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN,

rest assured they can SHATTER like a fragile ... (yet beautiful) ... HEART OF GLASS!!!

Bell Rock from the North

Rust Never Sleeps...

"Where the vulture glides descending,
On an asphalt highway bending,
Through libraries and museums, galaxies and stars.
Down the windy halls of friendship,
To the rose clipped by the bullwhip;
The motel for lost companions,
Waits with heated pool and bar.

But me I'm not stopping there,
Got my own row left to hoe.
Just another line in the field of time ..."

Neil Young (from Rust Never Sleeps) - 1979

cp0915I love Sedona

Voted 10/10

Bagged quite a few peaks there too (though not as many as Andinistaloco has). Great pictures!

Yes, I know you guys and gals have been out here bagging peaks.

I was attempting to put an "artistic" spin on the place. From now
on, I'll try my best to gather beta on these remarkable landforms.

Believe me, these red formations are really habit-forming!!
(I still haven't even touched the surface, yet!)

No problem, woman of the caves! Interesting ... with all these
"eye's candies," I forgot to check and see if there were any caves.

How about a 'sinkhole?' Does a sinkhole qualify as being a cave?

RED is also my favourite! Red is a colour that always has a
sense of danger attached to it, and some say DANGER is what keeps
the old ticker (heart) healthy and alive and pounding! :-))

Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or rocks that can naturally be dissolved by ground water circulating through them, so maybe in a broad sense - speaking about solution caves in karst areas- it does, even though I think it's incorrect. In my opinion a "sinkhole" rather qualifies as being a "doline".

PS: here you'll find an interesting pdf lexicon of karst geology terms

disclaimer: No geologist here, just "woman of the caves" ;-)
so if there's anybody here at SP who is more qualified to reply to Larry's question, please do! I'm curios myself. Help me to get rid of my ignorance. ;-D .lol. thanks

Hey Barbara, thanks for the links! I have a better understanding
of what caves, dolines and sinkholes are now.

As far as I know, we have no "dolines" in Arizona. We do have a
sinkhole not too far from where I live, but it's a "sandstone
sinkhole
." It's a cavernous void in the Earth that extends 50 feet downward and more than 100 feet across.

Besides its size, it has a most "curios" appearance! A 20' by 40'
"white wall" lines the north face of the sinkhole, almost as if
concrete had been poured and whitewashed.

Like other sinkholes, this one formed when a subsurface void
was created from minerals that were dissolved and washed away by the action of a subterranean stream.

I promise that I will take some photos of it. Please, don't worry
about claiming ignorance - we all have questions regarding this amazing planet Earth that we inhabit. I mean ...

even Mister Al Gore had to start somewhere, right??? : ))))

(Take care, woman of the caves! !)

THANKS - it's not Lone Peak, the Pheifferhorn or Mount Olympus,
but guess it's colorful enough to be noticed here on SP.

mstenderAmazing Colors!

Voted 10/10

Hey lcarreau, thanks for this really cool page. The colors on the pictures are just amazing. My favorite is the "Court of Crimson King" picture. Do you think I am biased because it is my favorite band? Anyway, I'll pop in the CD in my car tomorrow, crank it and then drive around thinking on your picture. GREAT JOB!

Hello, Matt:

No, I don't believe that anybody is biased on Summitpost! : )))

It was a free country, the last time I checked! Pop in whatever
you want - I just figured that the lyrics matched the photograph
of Courthouse Butte here in AZ.

At the risk of sounding modest, I just look at myself as the man
holding the camera. Nature and King Crimson does the rest !!!

Thanks, Matt ... and take care of yourself. -Larry

Thanks, Jim! Please give my regards to Dean; I haven't heard from him in awhile. My wife & I are planning a trip to Utah in May.

pictures, Larry. You're an excellent photographer! I'm thinking I'll use these to sell my wife on AZ as our destination for spring break 2010:)

Andinistalocovery nice!

Voted 10/10

Larry, these are some great pictures of Sedona. I had a good time checking them out and remembering hikes I've taken there, spires climbed, and the like. Even more interesting were the different names we've heard for the formations - for example, The Sphinx for Morning Glory spire! I'm sure I'll catch you down there some day - if I haven't already.

lcarreauRe: Thank you...

Yes, already learned where Morning Glory spire, Gibraltar Rock and
Summit Block Rock are located.

I still need to visit Earth Angel and Queen Victoria.

Who am I to argue, but it DOES resemble The Sphinx!
For cryin' out loud ... the THING even winked at me !!! !

Great area, isn't it? I was down again yesterday.

You're right... especially from the angle you took that shot, it looks a hell of a lot like the Sphinx!

Looks like the snow might be accumulating above 4,500 feet?

Almost time to capture some white stuff on red rocks!

Just started snowing here. First one of the year. Hmmm, we'll see. This could spoil my climbing plans!

Then again, it could make things more "challenging" by adding an
icy sheen to the rocks !!! : )
