Climbed Peñalara along the Dos Hermanas Route. Descended along Risco de Calveles where we missed to stay on top of the ridge and found ourselves right in the middle of the south face. Returned and continued the proper route

Starting on Puerto de Cotos I ascended Dos Hermanas Mayor on the way to Peñalara. Before I'd stopped near Peña Citores for having lunch. Stayed some minutes on Peñalara summit and ascended Dos Hermanas Menor before taking a shortcut in the pinewood trying to avoid the last zigzag. The weather was windy in the ascent and sunny in the descent. As always in Peñalara it was somehow crowded.

I ascended Peñalara with Nadie on the left pinewood route (to the west of Dos Hermanas normal) from Puerto de Cotos. Crossed the col between Peña Citores and Dos Hermanas, ascended Dos Hermanas Menor treading only a few big snow patches and joined the crowd then. But we ascended Dos Hermanas Mayor before reaching Peñalara summit on snow and few rocks. Finally we descended on Dos Hermanas normal route through the right pinewood.

Climbed penalara three times this past summer. First time we got caught in a sub-zero hail storm! It was my first introduction to fast changing weather in the mountains. The next two times were a success and a beautiful hike.

I solo climbed Peñalara starting on Puerto de Cotos, through the right pinewood, below Laguna de Peñalara, passing Laguna de Claveles and Laguna de los Pájaros. I first ascended Risco de Claveles, then Peñalara and descended treading both Dos Hermanas tops. When starting Menor descent I first noticed a pain because of my slipped disk that after the next summer I've suffered during many months.

EricChuPeñalara, July 1996  Sucess!

I went up Peñalara from the little railway station right at it's foot and came back via Cinco Lagunas. An easy trail with a spectacular view; the weather was extremely clear that day, and I could see over about 100 km across the Meseta plains in the direction of Valladolid. The Cinco Lagunas trail is beautiful and very alpine in character. The grass is, contrary to everything else in the area, of a rich green that makes you feel as if you're in the Bernese Oberland or in Tyrol. All along the entire hike you meet wild bulls - the typically spanish black ones. As long as you don't provoke them or make them feel cornered, they don't harm a fly. Except for a rather large herd I saw passing by when I was at the Col on Peñalara's north side - thank goodness from a good distance! - they all rather reminded me of Ferdinand the bull! ;-)

RicardoEchanove1Route climbed: From la Granja...  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 11, 2009

We went up from "la Granja de San Ildefonso" to Puerto de los Neveros. From Puerto de los Neveros we ascent Alto de las Neveras and then, by Risco de los Claveles to Peñalara. Going down we went up Hermana Mayor. From Hermana Mayor we went down to Zabala hut, and then, going along Peñalara lakes to Puerto de los Neveros. Then we went back to la Granja, after about 9 hours.
In my opinion much more interesting than going from Cotos.

Date Climbed: Dec 1, 2007

This trip was quite a change from my first climb to Peñalara (in June 2005), but I really enjoyed it. I traveled to the area with two friends and we reached the summit by the Dos Hermanas normal route, coming down afterwards by the Risco de los Claveles and the Laguna de los Pájaros.

My first visit to the mountains of Madrid. Interesting ascent to Peñalara with wide landscape. The fog and the clouds cover us in the summit. Ww descended across Los Claveles (some of snow and ice in this ridge) and the laguna de los pájaros y laguna grande without views. Nice route.

Really good weather. Maybe the worst thing was Peñalara and Puerto de Cotos was crowded, even I found a friend near Dos Hermanas.
I saw some pieces of ice, the first evidences that winter and snow will be there soon (I hope so).

Date Climbed: Feb 10, 2007

I started early, alone. The day was no good, not cold but windy. There was heavy fog. Most of the people climbing the mountain turned back on Dos Hermanas.
Fortunatelly I found somebody with a GPS and I joined him. He guided me to the summit.
The weather over 2000 m was horrible, hard fog and strong wind. My pole, and my clothes was completely frozen.

Later, 14.00 more or less, the fog run away and the sun started shining.

Diego SahagúnDos Hermanas Normal in winter conditions  Sucess!

We both started on Puerto de Cotos at 2:05 PM. Once on the forest trail we went along it, left the top of Dos Hermanas Menor to the left and penetrated in the whiteout while leaving Dos Hermanas Mayor to the right. The temperature had descended from 6ºC on Puerto de Cotos to -1ºC, so we put our winter clothes on and ascended to the summit of Peñalara. We had seen many people descending, two of them without gloves and wearing light clothes. Though from the final section of the ascent we saw nobody.

We reached te top of Peñalara at 4:15 PM and found some big rocks as shelter for eating something, the wind was strong next to the survey point. After 10 minutes we started the descent. It started to rain despite the freezing conditions so we put our hoods and big gloves on. We left Dos Hermanas Mayor to the left and reached the top of Dos Hermanas Menor (5:05 PM). Once on the forest trail the wind had almost stopped so it started to snow. It didn't snow a lot but it was late so we took the short cut along the old ski-run to Puerto de Cotos. I twisted my right ankle when I put my feet in a hole but it was only a fright. While writing this text my ankle is near perfect. At 6:25 PM we were in my car again. We could see a fox on the road when driving back home, it was between Puerto de Navacerrada and Puerto de Cotos and near the last.

Nadie and me started the ascent at 5:30 PM on Puerto de Cotos. It was warm on the S slope of Dos Hermanas Menor but we pushed forward, passed to the right of its top and reached the summit of Peñalara at 7:10 PM. We stayed there 10 minutes and started the descent, reached the tops of Dos Hermanas Mayor (7:45 PM) and Dos Hermanas Menor (8:05 PM) and descended quick taking the short cut to the old Area 2100, the forest trail, the ancient ski-run and finally we went into the left (from the road pass) pinewood to Puerto de Cotos (9:20 PM).

cuyayaMay Day Climb  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 1, 2006

I climbed up after more than a year of wanting to. Since none of my city-folk friends wanted to get down and dirty, I ended up tricking my girlfriend into coming along, understating the difficulty of the hike.

The route up, the Dos Hermanas trail, wasn't too bad; most of the snow had melted by May, except for the trail which rode up from the lakes, which we didn't take, following the advice of climbers that had come that way. They said that there was way too much ice to go that way if one didn't have crampons and ice axes.
