Skied in from White Pine, bootpacked up the Maybird Headwall and summited solo. Proceeded to ski down the headwall; great snow for late April! Skied mashed potatoes/sun crust all the way back to the car. 5 hours round trip.

Date Climbed: Jul 4, 2007
A week or so before the 4th I attempted to climb the Pfeifferhorn, but went up White Pine Canyon by accident. Upon realizing our mistake we traversed up and over the ridge separating the two canyons, and kept pushing up to the saddle. At that point I was spent from breaking trail over some unforgiving terrain and decided to knock it off another day. It felt good to take care of that unfinished business.

One of my favorite peaks in the Wasatch. Went with my younger brother and brother-in-law. Had a great time. Camped right by Red Pine lake. Perfect weather.

Seventh time on the summit on (11-1-07) of this striking mountain. Donned snowshoes above Red Pine lake since postholing up to the knees was making us all irritable! Crossing the knife-edge below the summit was not bad. Up 4+00, down 3+00. Thanks to Zeejay & Lana for a fabulous climb. Eighth time (5-13-08) in lots of snow, up a very steep, snow-drifted summit ridge, and with 4 good friends. Just for fun we then hiked east and knocked off White Baldy. So we had a two-fer spring snow climb. Yee-haw! 9th time on 6-12-08 w/ L & Z, again. Fresh snow complicated the east summit block climb. So much snow, still! :) Tenth time (7-9-08) as part of the Beat-Up hike via Sam Thomas Gulch. Loooong day, I can tell you that. (See No. Thunder climber's log for a description of that endurance test.) 3-17-09 Summit #11 w/ Dave, Anne & Christine. This is the time of year to use the Maybird approach, so we did. #12 7-21-09 W/ Dave, Brent & Anne 2+40 up Red Pine route. #13 8-29-09 With Brent & Dave, via Red Pine, 2+24 up. #14 3-20-10 The finest winter climb of the Pfeiff I've had, bar none. #15 5-25-10 w/ Dave & Christine as part of Beatout hike in the deepest late spring snow I have ever encountered. 5+25 to top. #16 7-27-10 W/ Brent & Dave, Red Pine, 2+40 up. #17 8-12-10 W/ John P. Lewis - his 1st time. 3+05 via Red Pine route. #18 5-26-11 W/ Walt & Christine. Never seen so much snow. 4+55 up and worth every minute of hard work. #19 5-28-11 Part of Beatout w/ WMC. Trailbreaking on 5-26 helped, but 3" new snow since then! #20 12-20-11 W/ Dave, Christine, Anne, ZeeJay and Walt. Not much snow for this time of year, but howling winds along the Red Pine headwall. 4+10 up, 2+55 down. #21 5-11-12 W/ ZeeJay. Great snow, crampons from Red Pine lake. 3+47 up, 2+45 down. #22 8-7-12 W/ Dave. 2+45 up, 2+24 down. "take it easy!" #23 8-28-12 W/ Dave & Walt via Maybird & Hogum Forks and "no name" peak. 8 total hours from White Pine TH. #24 3-30-13 Solo. Fine snow. 3+54 up 2+45 down. Used every piece of equipment I had lugged with me: microspikes, snowshoes, ice ax and crampons. 7+02 total time. #25 5-11-13 With WMC Beatout (aborted) Extremely difficult snow conditions with much postholing, etc. About 4+25 up! Seven returned, three continued on. #26 8-20-13 W/ Brent. Lazy dog-day up in 3+08. Absolutely no wind! #27 3-20-14 Finally bagged this puppy in calendar winter (last day thereof). Tough solo climb with hairy down climbing from the summit. 4+21 up.

I love the Lone Peaks! The sharp ridges, the glacieral valleys cut through the granite mountains. The class three talus-pile ridges make for fun climbs to the summit. There's lots of water coming up red pine, even within the last hour or two from the summit. We went up at night and hit the summit in the morning. Lots of great places to camp.

May 19, 2012 - Did the beatout route with Joe B, Pfeifferhorn is the first peak.
June 5, 2010, I wasn't really planning on summiting the Pfeifferhorn but I was in the neighborhood having climbed up to the Obelisk on the Hogum Hogback (divide). My first time up it via the Maybird headwall, which I found to be much faster than the east ridge via Red Pine Lake.
July 31, 2009 -- From Chipman Peak
Walked up to the 2nd Hamongog from Alpine, then strolled over to Lake Hardy and on up to Chipman peak and then over to the Pfeifferhorn. Traversed the Pfeifferhorn and bushwacked south to the base of Box Elder Peak where we hooked up on the Deer Creek Trail, and then the North Mountain trail which took us to the first Hamongog, and from there back to our camp at the 2nd Hamongog. 16 hour day!!!
September 15, 2007 -- Via East Ridge from Upper Red Pine Lake
I love the views from the peaks in the Lone Peak Wilderness, and Pfeifferhorn is no exception. It's great to be able to see into both Utah and Salt Lake counties. This is a great trip to do as an overnighter, cause there are lots of places to camp along the way that have access to water. Pfeifferhorn is a pretty easy summer climb.
Here is a quick video of us on the peak: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KIylOaDSMA.

Couldn't find a partner, so went alone. From Upper Red Pine Lake I drifted towards the east too much and made the summit ridge at the base of White Baldy...so it made for an extra long scramble along the ridge to Pheifferhorn. This is one of my favorite hikes! I had the mountain to myself the whole time I was up there. Finally saw other hikers on the way down.

Beautiful day, with surprisingly clear views of the entire valley and most of the Wasatch range. I met a couple other climbers at the right before the beginning of the summit pyramid and we all summited together; it was a truely great day.

Wonderful hike as it is every year! I was a little low on my energy level, but we still made good timing. Thank you, Jennie, for going with me. As popular of a hike as the Pfeiff is, I've never had to wait so much for people as they went across the scramble on the ridge. I didnt mind though. It's good sometimes to see so many people in the mtns. good times!

July 1996 - successful trip to/from Red Pine
August 2005 - unsuccessful attempt via Maybird Headwall; some less experienced group members were too slow at boulder-hopping and we ran out of time and had no headlamps or flashlights so had to turn around.
August 17, 2008 - successful loop up Red Pine, down Maybird Gulch. The mountain showed much more human impact from its popularity than I remember from 12 years ago, but there was total solitude in Maybird Gulch.
June 3, 2012 - snow climb up Red Pine, glissade down Maybird. It's 2012, so add 3-4 weeks to get an idea of the snow conditions. People w/out ice axes were able to go around the snow all the way up the summit pyramid, but why go out of your way to have less fun?

Met a group of people from SummitPost, including Cougarclimber, Ammon Hatch, climbingchic, elessar, and madjohnbo. elessar's friend Lars also came along.
Left the White Pine trailhead at around 5:15am, made it up the Pfeifferhorn's east ridge at around 10am. Decided to turn around due to time and safety (the summit pyramid was a bit more than some people wanted to stomach).
Snow conditions were inconsistent. Used (and definitely needed) snow shoes on the way in, but the was a mix of hard icy snow (good for crampons) with patches of crust over power (better for snow shoes), with a good measure of hidden (and not so hidden) rocks thrown in for good measure. I decided to leave the crampons at the trailhead and just used my MSR snow shoes. They were great for most of the trip, but as we got on the steeper sections of the ridge I wished that I had brought the crampons.
Avalanche conditions were the best of the season when we went, but I was still a little nervous. I noticed a few point-release sluffs on steep side slopes on the way out that I hadn't noticed on the way in.
Beautiful scenery. Definitely worth doing.

Went to the base of it after traversing the ridge. Didn't like the avalanche danger and decided to not test the fates this day.
Went again on June 30, 2007 and finished easily this time. A much easier hike in the summer. Went via Red Pine again.

I just did Pfeifferhorn today again, during the heavy snow storm. It was awesome. I was breaking trail all the way up and all the way down because of the mass of new snow and strong wind. It took me 12,5 hours roundtrip. This mountain is great.
