Wow so much snow, the upper Red Pine Lakes where still frozen over. Snow must have been anywhere from 8-15 ft in depth. The wind was a huge factor, I have never been in such a strong constant wind hiking this trail before. Crampons and ice axe was extremely helpful getting up and over the ridge to the summit. Loads of fun!!!

A fair amount of snow for the aproach in. I was glad to have brought an Ice Axe as it was much needed for the acent as well as for the glissade back down. Fun climb

All I can say is WOW!!! Solo trip. Started at the Red Pine trail head, hiked to Red Pine. Camped at Upper Red Pine and caught a nice trout for dinner (they're in there but they're wary and smart) Next day I climbed the East Face of the Phiefferhorn and saw what must have been 15 to 20 mountain goats playing below the summit. Went on down the ridgeline over Thunder and Lightning. Then accidentally followed the wrong trail off the ridge and ended up in Alpine instead of Bell's Canyon. GPS!!! Insanely beautiful solitary trip.

The first timeI went solo as Father's Day present to myself in '02. I encountered snow before the Maybird spur and kept on going. I had originally planned a hike to Red Pine Lake but the awsome scenery kept pulling me in and wouldn't let go. Soon I was kicking steps in the corness and using my hiking pole as an axe to attain the ridge. I had dropped my phone while crossing the knife-edge ridge section and had to downclimb a bit to retrieve it. I called my Dad and wished him a Happy Father's Day from the summit. I hurried down as fast as I could and drove directly to a family party that started at 6:30 pm.
The second time was June '04 and I went with my youngest son who was 27 at the time. We did the East ridge route, this time with crampons which certainly adds a measure of security. After summiting we glissaded from the base of the peak into Maybird Gulch bypassing the knife-edge section. This was pleasent and gave me a full tour of an area I was not familiar with. My son said this was the most impressive hike he had ever done and still talks about it.
The third time was Aug 10th '09. This time there was absolutely no snow and I must say probably the most difficult. I perfer climbing in snow to loose rock, also glassading on the descent is much more pleasent than descending thru steep rock.

This is one of my favorite mountains to climb in the Wasatch. Went up Red Pine Canyon to the top. The ridge has easy scrambling. I wanted to continue along the ridge but I would have to leave that for another day. Descended Maybird Gulch back to the trailhead.

Very cool route! Climbed with my freind Matt Long. One should be careful of loose rock on this route. We really didn't encounter much loose rock at all.

What's not to love about this little beauty? The boulderhopping along the ridge is splendid!
Last time I hiked it, we did Deseret Peak in the Stansbury range on the same day. (My father's crazy idea!)

A fairly busy mountain in the summer. Spring snow climbs are excellent. One of the most varied and enjoyable mountains in Utah.

Great hike on a beautiful Fall day! Great foilage colors. Summited by myself, but met up with a group ascending the final summit. Saw a huge group of mountain goats too. Great views from the peak. Will definitely do it again.

This is one of my favorite peaks anywhere. I climb this peak every spring to warm up for mountaineering trips and to practice basic skills. In 01 we heard a loud boom and an avalanche came down right behind us while we were climbing the headwall and that was enough to scare us all. In 2008 I finally made an ascent via Maybird with Matthew VanHorn and it was fantastic. (See trip report)
5/30/09 - With the Wasatch Mountain Club on the Beatout. This was a great day with a good group.
8/30/11- 1:58 to the top. With Jun32.

Great climb, beautiful hike up to Red Pine Lake, then steep, faint track up to ridgeline (and great view back to lakes below). Follow ridge east first on wonderful trail, then short exposed scramble before steep final ascent. Summit view could be best of any Wasatch peak.

May, 2002 - Great day hike on the E Ridge via Red Pine. Hiked from 10 am 'till 3 pm. Celebrated w/ some brewskis with fellow Wasatch Mountain Club hikers. One of my favorite hikes. I've gotta try this peak in the winter. I also have ambitions to do it again as part of the Beatout Ridgerun.
January, 2004 - Great snowshoe on the E Ridge via Red Pine, although I couldn't see much through the thick cloud cover.
March 12 , 2005 (Failed Attempt) - Tried to climb the N Ridge via Maybird with Joe Bullough, Glen Merrill, and Matt Long. Joe and I bailed on the route just beyond the fixed line traverse after it was apparent that we were moving too slowly and it was getting late.
December 28, 2009 (Failed Attempt) - Skinned up Dry Creek with ambitions to climb the N Ridge via Hogum Fork one day with Randy Covington and then Thunderbolt Ridge with Randy, Matt (Marauders) and Brenton Peterson on another day. Conditions beat the crap out of us, so I summited Chipman Peak as a consolation peak.

Camped at the head of Maybird Gulch. Scrambled up the talus to the east ridge and followed it to the summit. Very pretty mountain, I hope to try it in winter sometime.
