More than once, I've suggested dumping POTD/POTW and bringing back POTH with three slots. Yes, there would still be contests, and yes, there would sometimes be late-night junk without a vote getting featured, but you'd have three new photos displayed every hour of every day. Even the vote-seekers can't post all day long, or at least I hope they can't.

The way I see it , we have some really over-sensitive and insecure people out there.
They have been labeled (on this thread) as being "photogs."

I don't think that's being fair to those folks. They are just people wanting to BELONG to something. They post photos in hopes they'll get the praise and encouragement they lack
at home and in today's mechanized World.

I also know that the world isn't fair, so some of these "photogs" are going to have to "bite the bullet" when a CHANGE comes to either the voting system or the Front Page.

I have a lot of Eye Candy in my collection, but I try to make the captions as interesting and entertaining as possible. And, I'm learning that if somebody doesn't fully agree with me, I just let that BOUNCE OFF and let it fly back into the face of the one who flung the insult.

Constructive criticism is GREAT, but there's always those over-sensitive/insecure folks who are going to LASH out at you.

I don't intend to 'down-vote,' but I will be more selective in the voting game.

(And, to tell you the truth, I'm much more worried over CATS and BUTTERFLIES than I
am over AVATARS and SPOILED KIDS right now.)

I'm inclined to agree with the diagnosis that "it's the voters." So, why do the voters like certain eye candy?

The route beta pictures are too local. If you live nearby or have current plans, you might like the picture, but non-locals won't. Obviously, most people ignore those.

Larry's butterfly collection, The Fox, wildflowers, and kittens are universal. You don't have to have a relationship with a place to care. Postcard shots of famous mountains (Trango, Blanc Group, Matterhorn) are the same eye candy. A shot of most rock faces won't do it.

I realize that the owners of the site are hands-off and unlikely to do anything. But if they were going to do something--why not work with people's natural tendency instead of against it? Have featured shots along the bottom of the page sorted by fauna/flora (1 picture) and by region (South America and so on). Feature five regional shots and one fauna/flora, rotating each hour, giving everybody variety and (if you choose the regions right) biasing the game in the direction you want.

Why does any of this make a difference? Apart from the REI discount?

Okay -okay! I'm willing to admit that everybody's DIFFERENT & have different TASTES.

When you mentioned "Larry's butterfly collection" you're referring to another Larry, right??

The only butterfly photo I have in my collection is a MOTH. Embarassed

I LONG for a day when toadstools, huckleberries, butterflies and cats are EQUAL, and
hopefully not "ABOVE" the rest of us.

The voting system doesn't work not because of this "eye-candy" shots, that can be nice to see every now and then. It doesn't work because it can be easily manipulated by a group of members, just using the "I vote all your pics no matter how crappy or OT they are if you vote all mine and I also write nice comments and compliments to your contributions if you write nice comments and compliments to mine" system.

I really can't see what all the fluss is about :
in SP there are
- members whose main goal is to catch points to get "power" (?!?)
- members who think that this site is a kind of photo contest or simply a webspace for their photos
- members who like to share their knowledge of the mountains
each one has his way to post search and find what he really considers interesting

I myself have never felt belittled for never having a POTW Laughing

I suppose there's a scientific or psychopathical reason for an individual's voting behavior.

My reasoning is simple:
"When viewing SP's Front Page, you must remember that life is like a box of chocolates,
because you never know what you're going to get
!"

I agree totally with gabriele and add as one of the newer members of SP that it seems some post photos simply to post them and they really have no clue what the expectations of any other members are as to what should be posted or even voted on. If the philosophy of SP is upheld then this is okay, their photos will fall by the wayside so to speak.

My experience upon finding SP last year was to 'lurk' for six months before ever posting anything. I looked at what was being posted and how it was voted on (contrary to the actual voting guidelines) and scanned the forums. Then I started posting.

I'm happy to have found a place that focuses on mountains and outdoor activities. And I too could not care less about POTD, POTW. Yes, I look at and enjoy these pictures, especially the POTW but I don't worry about how they get chosen or even if SP has them.

My voting habits changed recently also. I don't vote on most climbing routes because I have little knowledge and while I know which eye candy tends to trigger my vote (just like chocolate Rolling Eyes ) I decide if it really is a good photo or just a trigger now. And I've gotten cranky about voting for unknown User Profile Images posted in large quantities. Come on people, give us some beta!!!

Time to get down from my soapbox....

What's the big deal?????

I mean, who cares enough to get all uppity over who, or what, gets POTW or POTD? What's the motive behind what people post and what people vote on? Who cares! It shouldn't matter one way or the other. Worry about yourself and you'll be happy. Why get your panties in a bunch? Let people vote for what they like. Not what someone else thinks they should vote for....

This is not directed toward any specific member, btw.

That's just my &$0.02.

I AGREE with my "AZ counterpart." There seems to be too many people getting their
panties and/or boxer shorts "bunched up" over something they have NO control over.

I guess you could label these folks as "control freaks."

BTW, what in God's name is a photog anyway ??? ???

And, does ANYBODY really care, other than the folks lining up at the door for the all-important REI discount ??? Question Shocked Cool

If you guys are going to want interesting pics for POTD (in other words, not the same euro mt (non active, no ski, no climb, etc) shot, 350 days out of year, you are going to have to dig...I missed Dan Dalton's ice climbing shots on the 7th and Radek's Smith Rocks shots on the 9th....these guys prob added them late which I guess does not work....as neither care of course about POTD....but for those of you wanting diversity...you can't just look at the top 10 or so like I posted earlier I was going to do....they all look the same. Antonio has a bunch already at the top today, same old story. Nothing personal, but 8/10 seems more than appropriate. Looking for something different Antonio. You seem to have way too many POTD for as many members and diversified photos as we have on this site.

If only half the energy that is spent in this incessant, tiresome whining went into self improvement, we'd see much better pictures on SP.
