Once the photo of the day wasn't of course always the best one but was almost always a good/informative photo. Some of the last ones are really mediocre ( if not very bad ), I don't think that deserve to stay on the front page of an important site like this.
Is there a way to change this trend ?

They are based on votes by members. Elves/owners do not choose the POTD.

The Photo of the Day may not be your choice or my choice, but it is the choice of those who take the time to view the photo and/or vote on it. I see no need to make a change. I realize that Photo of the Hour was controversial and may have caused some problems. However, it did appear on the front page and provided exposure of 24 photos a day for SP users to look at and vote on easily. I find that I have been viewing fewer photos and voting less since POTH has been removed from the front page. I would like to see Photo of the Hour return for that reason. Perhaps the exposure of more photos on the front page would lead to more voting and different Photo of the Day results. I remember one time when one of my photos was stuck on Photo of the Hour for 3 days when SP had some technical problem. Because of that it received many more votes than it normally would and ended up being Photo of the Day and my 3rd highest ranked photo even though it wasn't that special.

I know that, probably if someone of the Elves/Owners chose the POTD it would be much better. The featured area/mountain/route pages chosen by the Elves are almost always the best ones.

I always voted the things I liked, but I'm one of the few. A lot of members simply vote each other, that's the point. It's no big deal anyhow, I just think that nice photos would look good on the front page.

I like good photos also but a picture of a tree trunk as photo of the day? What's going on here lately? http://www.summitpost.org/image/425448/Bole-of-Linden-Tree.html

Cheers!

Henryk takes many beautiful pictures of the Polish mountains, and clearly loves the flora of the region. I have enjoyed other pictures more than the tree, but many people clearly liked the tree. If you don't like it, you can (1) vote it down; or (2) vote something else up. Option (2) is preferred under the social norms around here, like it or not.

My attitude is, if you don't like nature, climb in a gym. Smile

I'd never use option 1 unless it was a terrible photo. As tree trunks go its a nice picture. Henryk is a great photographer. I just have an issue with a tree trunk being POTD on a mountain site. Oh well tomorrows another picture. Cheers!

I did some research on this issue. There was also another thread (by Dan Dalton) on this
POTD issue. The POTD and Photo-Of-The-Week are 'controlled' strictly by votes.

There are people with hobbies, and feel obligated to post photos of "every aspect" of the
mountain and desert environs. If you don't like a photo, please don't vote on it.

I know; it's the front page, and should deal with mountains. But, when you're taking photos
of a subject as fickle as Nature, there's going to be some surprises on the front page that
appear for a very short 24 hours. That's the way life is in cyberspace. Sometimes it sucks,
but most often it is AWESOME. Smile

I do get tired of seeing the same people get POTD all the time. Granted they take some nice photos. However, there are almost always better photos on any given day that don't get voted on because the submitter is not as popular.

Today is my 5 year anniversary and I have never had POTD or POTW since I joined this site. I think there are ways to game the system (submit photos at a certain time of day, create voting networks, etc.) that I don't subscribe to... I've pretty much lost interest in the POTD/POTW because of the gaming aspect.

I've only had one submission become POTD, from a couple of years back -

X2. Mine was a mountain (well, several, but mostly the Crestones). I think maybe it's because we haven't quite figured out the system yet. I think there's merit in letting the elves pick the photo. It does seem to be working quite well with the Featured Pages--at least I haven't seen much complaining about the pages selected.
