I looked through the last 7 days and voted for the best "PICTURES" I did not care what the subject was or why, I based my vote on the quality of the "PICTURE". If you posted a page with great mountaineering info with some awesome pictures of you placing gear in a big wall, I'd vote for it as well, but not for being a great "PICTURE" I would vote for it for being informational to mountaineers. It's pointless to complain about a community produced website, you are as much a part of this community as everyone else. If you don't like the general direction of the submissions, then submit more of what you want. It's not like you don't have control over what gets submitted, you have as much control as everyone who submitted the pictures your referring to, and everyone who's going to read this post...
If you had time to post this, you may have time to submit something you feel fits the site better...if it's good, I'll be the 1st to vote... |
I voted for some of the pictures too, because as you said, they were well done. Regardless, it still makes more sense to me to see photos of climbing (in any form whatsoever) on the front page. I guess I have never fully read the mission of SP, but I was unaware that hiking and nature took such large positions. There is nothing wrong with this.
And I do have the power, you are right, in the form of my own posts. And I do try to make and post pages with high quality info and pictures of routes, weather it be a sport route or a bouldering area. I hope people find them informative and useful. I look up to and try to emulate others with positive well contributed beta when posting, (i.e. people such as rpc and dow.)
I guess for me SP represents a place where info on any summit, whether it be a boulder or Everest, can be found. It is not as technical as other sites like mountainproject or rockclimbing.com; but SP offers a large source of information on the greater ranges, mountaineering, and treking. SP is also more focused and goal oriented than other sites, (such as 14ers.com) where forums are not used to chat with buddies, but to discuss climbing/treking related matters.
I just wanted to make sure that SP was not headed in a different path because it has so much potential to expand and grow in the niche it occupies.

Dan, Summitpost is GROWING! But, it's growing with DIVERSITY at its forefront.
There's different types of people here in the Summitpost Community. Some of them will
always be more HEAVY on hiking/nature, while others will want to discuss or portray technical routes. WHAT'S WRONG WITH INVITING BOTH INTO THE PICTURE!!!
As far as the front page goes, there's been complaints about it in the past. I guess if you
don't like a particular photo for some reason, you don't have to vote on it. |
