I know this is probably just going to make people angry, but here we go. Not that I don't love the photo of the day shots, (they are interesting, well composed, and enjoyable to look at), but for the past few days, and on a regular basis, they seem to be shots of animals or flowers close up. I thought this was SUMMITpost, not naturepost!? I know that there are hundreds of pics uploaded daily, and that at least some of them which are climbing related are magnificent enough to be photo of the day. It would be nice to see more action shots or mountain scapes featured here. I cannot remember the last time I saw someone placing gear on a big wall, or crimping hard on a sport route, or traversing a glacier with skis. I thought this was what SP was about.

If I am the only one that feels this way, I'll shut my trap, but I just wanted to know what everyone else thought about this.

Dan

(this is in no way an attack on those who enjoy shooting animals and plants and have had their photos featured, just a concern about the general message summitpost is trying to convey.)

It's only a matter of business I think
Once here we used to see pages and photos about alpinistic activities
then a lot of new members joyned posting hiking pages, photos of meadows, flowers, wild life and the number of hits grew up very fastly ...
you know that the earning coming from ads on sites grows proportionately to the number of hits that a site gets every day, week, month ... maintaining a site has a cost and can give a profit
it's our choice to decide if being part of that business or not Smile

Not angry........

SummitPosts main page sites that its for the outdoor enthusiast. Not just mountain climbing. I think any nature picture, whether bugs or rocks is promoted per their site statement below:

"SummitPost is a collaborative content community focused on climbing, mountaineering, hiking and other outdoor activities. This site is built by its members, and we welcome you to contribute:

(1) Post photos, trip reports, events, logs, and albums.

(2) Share your expertise by submitting how-to articles and informational pages.

(3) Shape the content of the site by voting on other people's work. The bad submissions get buried, and the good stuff rises to the top.

Read On..."

I voted for some of the pictures you speak of. I looked through the last 7 days and voted for the best "PICTURES" I did not care what the subject was or why, I based my vote on the quality of the "PICTURE". If you posted a page with great mountaineering info with some awesome pictures of you placing gear in a big wall, I'd vote for it as well, but not for being a great "PICTURE" I would vote for it for being informational to mountaineers. It's pointless to complain about a community produced website, you are as much a part of this community as everyone else. If you don't like the general direction of the submissions, then submit more of what you want. It's not like you don't have control over what gets submitted, you have as much control as everyone who submitted the pictures your referring to, and everyone who's going to read this post...

If you had time to post this, you may have time to submit something you feel fits the site better...if it's good, I'll be the 1st to vote...

Not a bad shot, focus is interesting but the subject is not composed well in the shot. I'd like to see a more proper use of the rule of thirds. Compared to the others in the recent submitted pictures, it would get a vote though...

I can see exactly what Dan is saying. But Squishy has a valid point also. I love to look at
photos of Mount Brewer and the Desolation Wilderness, because of the 'informational' value!
Same thing goes with awesome action photos of people on rocks; they are very FUN to look at. But, how are you going to CONTROL what other people POST or SUBMIT on the computer,
especially if they live thousands of miles away from you? ? ?

Hey, I love flowers, rocks & snakes just as much as the next guy or gal! But, with increased/improved TECHNOLOGY in regards to some of these digital cameras & the ability to operate (and AFFORD) them, I have to say that the FIELD is OPEN to everybody. After all, it's a PUBLIC SITE controlled by member's VOTES, right?? Wink

I voted for some of the pictures too, because as you said, they were well done. Regardless, it still makes more sense to me to see photos of climbing (in any form whatsoever) on the front page. I guess I have never fully read the mission of SP, but I was unaware that hiking and nature took such large positions. There is nothing wrong with this.

And I do have the power, you are right, in the form of my own posts. And I do try to make and post pages with high quality info and pictures of routes, weather it be a sport route or a bouldering area. I hope people find them informative and useful. I look up to and try to emulate others with positive well contributed beta when posting, (i.e. people such as rpc and dow.)

I guess for me SP represents a place where info on any summit, whether it be a boulder or Everest, can be found. It is not as technical as other sites like mountainproject or rockclimbing.com; but SP offers a large source of information on the greater ranges, mountaineering, and treking. SP is also more focused and goal oriented than other sites, (such as 14ers.com) where forums are not used to chat with buddies, but to discuss climbing/treking related matters.

I just wanted to make sure that SP was not headed in a different path because it has so much potential to expand and grow in the niche it occupies.

Dan, Summitpost is GROWING! But, it's growing with DIVERSITY at its forefront.
There's different types of people here in the Summitpost Community. Some of them will
always be more HEAVY on hiking/nature, while others will want to discuss or portray technical routes. WHAT'S WRONG WITH INVITING BOTH INTO THE PICTURE!!!

As far as the front page goes, there's been complaints about it in the past. I guess if you
don't like a particular photo for some reason, you don't have to vote on it. Smile

What about a "Wanted" section? I would like to see some close up shots of a crux on the traverse from Pyramid Peak to Mount Agassiz, a small notch possible class 4. How would I go about asking anyone if they have such a picture or information besides making a forum post? A small wanted section apart of each page would be cool, right next to the corrections and comments stuff...

This is a really good idea, and I like it a lot. This would be applicable to the other discussion in the forum about how people can add/edit/update very old pages.

Folks, this is an age-old discussion here. A bit of searching will reveal numerous threads on this topic, with widely ranging opinions. The bottom line is that the owners have given the nod of approval for wildlife and flower shots so they will remain a part of SP. It's not likely to change any time soon, if ever.

The best thing to do is vote on the photos you like.

Squishy, I might actually have a photo of that traverse. If I do, it won't be a close-up. I'll try to check when I go home.
