I was on Mt. Goode this morning and came across an active search and rescue scene. Anyone happen to hear of the details? Most I got was someone named 'Rick' is a day overdue on a trip up Goode?

After descending from that area on Saturday we learned of a man that went missing. The party had supposedly left the slowest member of their team behind while traveling between Mt. Goode and Treasure Lakes. The rest of the group reached the trailhead at South Lake and supposedly waited there for the slowest member. He never came out... hence the search.

A good lesson - to always stay together. Even if you put some distance between your group there should be some occasional meet up points - Especially the case if someone is having a particularly hard time. It is amazing how many stories you here like this one! Crying or Very sad

He did have a pack - so hopefully he is just camped out somewhere waiting for rescue...

Hmm, weird. Maybe he took a wrong turn. The trail is pretty well defined though.

Hope he's ok!

PLEASE HELP SEARCH FOR RIC!!!!
Exclamation I have a missing family friend named Ric Devan. He is an experienced hiker/rock climber. He left his wife and daughter on the hiking trail on Fri. 4th of July to spend the night and continue his hike. His wife Vicky and daughter are in Bishop, as are my son Mike and daughter-in-law Shannon. Ric is Shannon's brother. If there are any volunteers in the area that could help in the search for Ric we would be so greatful. You could contact the local authorities if you have any help to offer, we all would be eternally grateful. The official search and rescue teams are going to scale back their search after tomarrow.I am in Salem, OR. with an ailing Mom right now or I would be there too. Thanks so much to you all for all the prayers and support Exclamation
Best regards,
Sharon Cheffins. San Juan Capistrano CA. via Salem, OR. Sad

As a matter of correcting my original post; it would appear that the missing persons first name is spelled "Ric" (not Rick). A Google of Ric Devan turns up some notes on an experienced climber who's wife is same as noted above.

Also, it was evident to me that the INYO SAR team is doing everything in their power to execute the best search possible of the area. Thank goodness for expert and dedicated volunteers.

Search For Hiker Missing in the Sierra
Written by Tom Woods
Monday, 07 July 2008
In the Sierra above Bishop, the search continues for a hiker reported missing on July Fourth.

On this fourth day of search operations, rescuers planned to return to the back country near Bishop Pass to look for the missing man.

According to Inyo Sheriff Deputies, 44 year old Southern California resident Ric DeVan set out for Mt. Goode near Bishop Pass on the Fourth. DeVan, along with his wife and daughter set out toward Bishop Pass on Thursday July 3rd.

The plan was to spend the night of Third by himself, hike up Mt. Goode, traverse the ridge to Mt. Johnson, then head down to meet up with his wife and daughter at Treasure Lakes on the Fourth. When DeVan failed to show up at Treasure Lakes on the Fourth, his family members reported him missing.

Inyo Search and Rescue volunteers, along Mono County SAR and China Lake Mountain Rescue Team members have searched the area since Saturday but by last report had not found the missing man. Deputies report that DeVan did sign the summit register on Mt. Goode, stating that he planned to traverse to Mt. Johnson.

The Inyo Sheriff’s Department is looking for people who may have seen the missing man hiking on Thursday the Third, and Friday the Fourth in the Bishop Pass area. DeVan is said to have been wearing a yellow shirt with black side panels, tan pants, light colored back pack, grey jacket with black trim, a beige or green ball cap, and an orange, gold, and purple National Geographic bandanna. DeVan also had a Khaki one person tent.

If you were hiking near Bishop Pass on Friday the Fourth of July, and you saw someone who fits this description call the Inyo Sheriff’s Department at 873-7887 or 878- 0383.

Has this been posted to supertopo.com? There are folks on that forum who would assist as well.

The official search and rescue teams are not going out anymore and it is up to family,

friends and the community to continue the search for Ric. Ric has been missing less

than a week so there is a realistic hope that he may have survived what ever has

kept him from returning to his family. Thanks so much to you all for all the prayers and

support. Contact my son Mike at 619 966-9712 or 760 216-3151 Please spread

the word via e-mail and forums to solicit volanteers for the search. We need all

the help and eyes we can get to find him!!

I *think* this is the ridge in question. The left side of it is a relatively mellow slope. A fall on the right side would not be so good.

Are any SP-ers going out there? I'm not sure if you'll find more on foot though as the face seems to be the area to look. Pretty rough terrain; a helicopter might actually see more?

Saw that too. Looks like this ridge could definitely have class 4 sections...

As a member of one of the responding SAR teams I can confirm that SAR operations ARE continuing. Additional resources will be joining the search thru mutual aid requests made by Inyo County.
