This is one place you must go if you get the chance. Awesome! Amazing. Make plans if you have never been. Words fail me.....

This past weekend, Tate wanted to head up for some summertime fun. Who am I to argue, he was paying for gas, so.......Friday night, he gets off work at 11:30pm and home by midnight. We are packed and ready to go.

We drive north and hit West Yellowstone around 2am. No one around to take our $25....too bad. We cross the park in the dark, avoiding the odd bison or two. We meet just two outfits between West and Cooke City.

Just east of Cooke City the sun starts to rise.....man this is awesome country. We make our way to the top of the pass and have a look around. Snow still a big factor in the mountains everywhere we look.

Didn't take long before we found what we came for.......

We had a great time, epic July boarding....

Great views......

Some flora........

Some fauna......

Cascade Fire...just west of Red Lodge......

Granite Peak.......this is some amazing country!

Deja Vu-- I climbed up those slopes less than two weeks ago! I'm probably posting a page for that peak-- Stockaid-- tomorrow!

I see a little snow has melted out from the bottom, but it looks about the exact same otherwise.

That is the Gardner Headwall, just off the parking lot at the highest point on the Wyoming portion of the pass. Just above Garder Lake.

Easy to get to from the top, but you have to climb back out. We did it twice.......after that I was done.....gasp.....weeze....

Edit...just had a look at the topo, the top is the Stockaid BM.

Way to go JB and Sons! Fantastic photos of what looks like a terrific weekend! There is nothing like some summer time corn [snow] to lift the spirits!
Nice close up of the bear scat. Or, did you pour out a can of corned beef hash? Or, is that a rock? Or, is it what was left of lunch after your second climb out of the valley?
Cheers;
Tim

Thanks Vern! Trip Report? I don't know, we are just some lowly snowboarders...I just wanted to draw attention to this amazing area. The Beartooth Pass, especially the western portion, is just amazing. I keep saying that!

All of you that have never been there, raise your hand. If you raised your hand, get yourself up there someday. The sooner the better. Climbing areas abound. WoW!

Now that you mention it, that does look like a big pile of you-know-what! Shocked

Tate did drink too much water when we got back to the car and promptly ralphed it up......didn't look like that though......good times! Very Happy

I hiked down to Garner Lake and then climbed the snow and the rock islands to the top. I thought of glissading back down, but I thought it was just too steep, and the snow too hard, to do that safely or sanely. Maybe if I had a snowboard and knew how to use it...

So I just walked the ridges back to Gardner Lake TH. Great wildflowers.

You got that right! Even with a snowboard it was a bit sketchy, at least for me. My boys seemed to handle it just fine, but they are better boarders than I am.

The wild flowers are still present, and water everywhere up high. The place is truly amazing, words still fail me.....

The Beartooths. Pretty? Really?

Look at all those damn trees in the way. Now, if there was a mall there or something, we would not have that problem! Laughing

The Beartooths suck, don't bother coming, go to the Sierras or RM National Park or someplace, don't bother with Montana.

What was the snow like up across the road where the now-closed ski area is? At the end of June last year it was still skiable:

... but just barely so. I almost brought my skis but all reports indicated the snow was gone. Obviously, they were wrong!

That is about what it looked like at the end of July 2008.....still very ski-able. As a matter of fact, some very formidable cornices lined the ridge top. Whaahoo!
