Calgary/Canmore Area Climbers

Postby CanadianSteve » Sat Sep 19, 2009 7:59 pm

Hi Everyone

I just moved to Calgary from Vancouver Island, and am looking for partner(s).

I am a new trad climber (climbed a bit in Squamish, as part of a trad leading and multipitch course) and would love to get out and do some single or multipitch climbs in the area. I have little trad leading experience, so would LOVE to find a competent leader, so I can second, and possible switching leads on easier pitches. I have lead experience, but mostly from sport climbing. I am a cautious climber, and eager to get more trad climbing under my belt!

I would also like to do some scrambling, and some easier alpine climbing too.

I have a rope, basic rack, etc. and can arrange transportation (I have a 4x4).

Please contact me at roberts.sw@gmail.com for further discussion, or leave me a message at 250-208-1861.

Thanks, really hope to get in some climbing before the snow rolls in.

Not many Calgary/Canmore people on here.

Local climbing indoors where you can meet others http://www.calgaryclimbing.com/
Also U of C and Mount Royal walls.

MEC and Outdoor Approach stores http://www.outdoorspirit.ca/ have bulletin boards

On -line

http://www.live-the-vision.com/ - climbers but a few jerks spoil the atmosphere.

Guidebook publisher which has forum http://www.rmbooks.com:8080/~OutdoorsForum - scramblers, hikers and some alpine climbers

http://www.clubtread.com/default.aspx vancouver centric but has some alberta people. see alta TR's and discussion.

Alpine club, Calgary Mountain club, Calgary Outdoor club, Ramblers, etc.

Have fun - take care.

Dear Bill,

Looking for help I would like to explain you my interest to send my son to Canada for some time to discover by himself new culture, shearing experiences with other people abroad, learning English and growing up as a climber. I think Canada will offer him a great opportunity.
We live in Bilbao and industrial city sited in the North of Spain, were the practice of rock climbing it´s very popular, my son 16th years old enjoys this sport training 3 / 4 days a week with enough experience inside and outside practice.

We contact you as an expert with full acknowledge of climbing sport so it will be easier for you to understand that I would like to send my son to practice / training rock climbing with experience people and learn some English (not going to the school, just sharing experiences with other people abroad, making good friends keeping a nice relationship).

Gorka as lot of climbers enjoy practice of some sports, rock climb, mountain bike, surf or climb the mountains. We are living in and area in the north of Spain were most people use to go to climb mountains.

Born on May 14Th, 1997 - 15/16 years old). Today’s graduation, 7a, 7b, 7b+ (5.12a, 5.12b, 5.12c) improving. Due to the fact the he is an sport young boy, participating in official competitions in our local Area and in Spain

Gorka does not speak English beyond the grammatical he could learn on the school, he works hard to get good results and enjoys climbing a lot.

My wife and I we consider that if we could find a place for him to stay in for 2/3 months in summer (July/August) climbing with other boys with no effort he will learn English meantime he improve climbing skills.

Probably this is not a standard proposal but at least, as a father I would like to try the best.

Do you think it could be possible to find something similar for him?
Probably the best possibility would be to find a family of climbers with a boy of similar age or even older, it´s too difficult.

Thank you very much for you interest and good help.

As you are in contact with other climbers in your area may be you could recommend me something.

I do not know whether you could help us but please, in case you could, do not hesitate to contact me

Thank you for your good help
Best Regards

Hi Felipe,

I think the idea is good so I will check around and see who might be able to help.

Dow Williams is a full time climber who lives in Canmore in the summer who also might have some ideas or suggestions.

Take Care
