It's full of a lot of things - don't get me started on Prop 13, initiative insanity, and perpetually broken budget.

True, but CO seems to be catching up. My 36 acre lot in Lyons (stupid impulsive purchase) just got reassessed by the county and I'm looking at paying the same amount in taxes as if I had the land plus a $500K house on it. If, however, I fence it in and let livestock graze on it (instead of elk) then it drops to <$100 a year.

If I moved to CA my ice tools and crampons would rust, and my days out in the mountains wouldn't involve sufficient misery.

At this point I'm eyeing either Seattle or Vancouver, although I'm told Swiss universities are pretty eager to hire people with American PhDs.....

Factor in commute time. Great for the Chief... but for Angelenos, well, you might as well be in Vegas.

Take it from a euro, weather, weather and weather! You would be spending more time inside waiting for the rain to stop than being in the mountains.

What I DO like about CO over CA, is the quick access even if you live in a big city, especially in winter.

The best part about Colorado? All the people from California are in California instead of here

We drove home in just over 5 hrs from TM......

I can be pulling down at Malibux in just under 30 min. T & S in like 2 hrs, A-hills are about 3 hrs from home, and JT is 3ish.

Factor in the weather. I was rained out.... 1 time last year. 8) .....

We can climb almost 365 days/year. Shoot it only rains like 20 days/year down here....

In CO's favor though, you can be in big mountains from Denver in about 30min in the middle of the winter. Won't happen here...

If you rock climb, it's pretty hard to beat Boulder for convenience to the crags. That's about as good as it gets. But the people? I don't know. I think that's a serious detraction. I was considering moving to Colorado way back but met a lot of people with attitudes straight out of Alabama.

I once considered moving to CO as well but the year round quick access to the mountains was really the only advantage. Main disadvantages for me were:

* Financial; it didn't make sense since my wife would take a huge pay cut.
* Food/cultural; being from Europe, I can really appreciate the diversity in CA
* Weather; yes, I like my convertible and motorcycle :)
* Ocean; I grew up on one and would really miss it

I really try to keep an open mind to other places but I haven't found one that can actually beat it.

I live in Evergreen and I'm a bleeding heart liberal animal lover wordsmith backcountry enthusiast volunteer for the good cause old conservationist hippie. Coloradoans aren't ALL bible-thumping beer swilling mullet loving road hawg C&R crooner nose-pickers.

At lot of them, but not all.

Sure, with that Continental snowpack that likes to avy. Prefer to drive a little further and enjoy the Coastal pack myself. YMMV
