Climbing in costume ?

by rhyang » Wed Oct 28, 2009 2:51 pm

A certain guidebook says this about the Tollhouse Traverse -

Historical note: Tollhouse Traverse was ascended in the early '70s by two climbers, one attired in a baseball uniform and baseball shoes with metal cleats, the other in a roller-derby costume complete with roller skates. About 10 years later, another party climbed the traverse; the leader wore a full-length evening gown, nylons and high heels, her partner followed on cross-country skis and ski poles.

Last year a friend busted out a batman costume while we climbed Taking a Bath with Strangers .. I thought he was gonna trip on the cape a couple of times :)

Have you ever climbed in costume ?

Oh lord, I almost fell out of my chair trying not to laugh aloud at Tradman and Belay Boy! We should post this photo all over the 'Net and see how long it takes before somebody in Hollywood writes a movie script.

And yes, I've climbed (indoors) in costume, if you can call drag a costume, and there are photos on the Web. No, I won't give any hints about where to look for the photos.

The 6 year old daughter of our climbing gym member decided she wanted everyone who came to her birthday party to wear a dress. Hence "Climb in a Dress Day." And some of the guys looked pretty darn good in dresses. Furthermore, I saw you can climb 5.10 in high heels.

Something self-aggrandizing, no doubt. Perhaps a shirt that says "been that, did that," the most expensive Gramiccis possible, and a rack that's way, way too big.

I can't believe it, but a thread in E, S & S has actually inspired me.

From here on out, all of my guy climber friends will have to climb dressed as one of the following:

cowboy
pirate
man-in-uniform (police, fire, Marine, etc.)

I'm liking it. I'll send the email out today...

once got to the summit of Txindoki disguised as a cow... It was a foggy day, and he scared to death one or two dogs we found on the way up :)
