I would not call this "determination". I would take him aside and lecture the 9-year old something about priorities and social values.

+1! When I read that I thought this kid was a bit of a jerk, to put it mildly!

I said this kinda tongue in cheek although admittedly there's no way to tell from my wording. No, I don't really believe a kid should leave his mom in the lurch for the sake of.....anything. On the other hand, the kid could get mixed signals from her actions after his threat to go on without her. One, she was apparently motivated to follow instead of saying "Trent, how could you even think about leaving your own mother you little...." Second, she was apparently not bothered by his lack of concern for her because on the summit she "cried like a baby" for her son's achievement.

I agree- I am sure the situation is not quite like it sounded. I am more surprised by the claim this is news, than their non-incident on the trail.

How is that important what "impressive mountaineering feats" you have accomplished? What does that make you?

Are you being sarcastic!?!?!

These folks don't need any self esteem pumping. They are the ones seemingly looking for media attention for a little dayhike. Well, if that's what they want then they get it.

If you are being serious, then perhaps you should be the one that is more sensitive. Calling poor 9-year old Trent a girl 6 times in 3 sentences. What will his/her freinds think about this revelation?

It doesn't make you anything unless you name yourself after breakfast food as well.

edit: DMT, happened to see your last post before it was deleted. Don't see any issue with your comments above. I can only assume that by posting this 'news' you were looking for some type of response like what you see here!

Oh, apparently it was me that confused the thread by mentioning I got dropped by a nine-year-old girl a few years back on Mount Washington. Which, by the way, is an entirely more impressive feat since Trent (the boy) was only climbing Mount Whitney whereas the girl in my anecdote was climbing the 6th most dangerous mountain in the world.

the only result i see of disbanding PnP has been to spread it evenly around SP, not much differently than this:

please pay close attention to the dialogue: it is analogous, symbolic, and prophetic.

are we seriously debating the 9-year old wanting to ditch his mom on the mountain?

kid to his friends later: my mom was all like, "hey, i'm so tired. i think we should stop." and i was all like, "whateva. mom, ur so lame. i'm gonna keep going."

i mean, really. he's nine. lecture him all you want about climbing ethics. he'll just roll his eyes at you and keep on truckin.

btw, this news really makes me think about trying to be the first texan to do all the california cohp's. maybe i can get a sponsor.

C'mon out! The CA cohp's beat the Texas ones- from what I've heard.

Or maybe you can be the first Texan to do the Texas cohp's?

My take on this is the kid doesn't have any attitude any different than any other 9 year old.

I didn't read anything that says the parents are looking for some TV time or press time.

If they were, then they should have did a little homework- and read about what Paul Richins Jr. daughter has accomplished.

This is a non story.
