Sport climbing makes you a better climber all around (unless you climb sport exclusively). Unless you are independently wealthy or a pro. climber, to get in the pitches you need to progress, you're going to have to spend alot of time relatively close to the road. Of course, you can climb only in the way back anyway; you'll end up with a bunch of summit hero-shots to impress the ladies. That won't change the fact that you had to take the cow trail to get there. It really does all depend on what you want to be.
