Elbert in Feb.

by silbor6 » Mon Jan 09, 2017 6:12 pm

Hello All,

My first post here. Hiking Mt. Elbert via the South Mt. Elbert Trail on Feb. 23rd and 24th. Plan is to get to the upper treeline, camp overnight, summit and back down next day. Will be staying in Leadville on the 22nd, and the 24th. Planning on going solo, but as this will be my first 'real' snow climb, I'm looking for others to increase safety with someone who has snow experience.

E-Mail : silbor6@yahoo.com or reply here.

Thanks !!!

- Michael

It's long, but it isn't much of a snow climb. The slopes are so gentle that even an ice axe is useless.

Make sure to stay on route though. The East Ridge is safe from avalanches, but if you get off route you can get into avalanche terrain very quickly.

I would join you (I have done it several times that time of year), but I don't think I can get off during the week.

Good luck.
