New Year + Russian Christmas holidays (from December 30 to January always bring crowds of skiers in the area. All hotels are overcrowded and prices are enormous. Now holidays are over and one can get a bed in hotel even on the spot.
Weather was(and is) very cold and this brings problems to skiers and climbers. Snow is very icy and hard even on official runs.
Temperatures on high elevations are impressive: day time temperature on the Saddle of Elbrus was minus 60 degrees Celsius. Add strong winds and you can imagine that climbing Elbrus in January is a hard affair.
Some groups made summit attempts and most of their participants had frostbites. The standard route is almost completely icy from 4200 to 5000 m.
