Feather Couloir

Postby Deb » Tue Jan 10, 2012 3:08 am

Anyone been up Feather Couloir in the past couple of weeks? Conditions? Descent? From what I read, there is no sweet way to descend, but which is the least annoying (keep in mind, I ABHOR down-climbing rock!)?
Bring on the beta quick, we're looking at hitting it this coming weekend.

there is a TR for you. Based on what I have seen myself in the last two weeks you may have a section or two of blue ice and a lot of good neve/water ice mix that is good for quick pick plunges...enjoy

Deb, in the Vitaliy's picture above, once you reach the top of the Couloir, scramble up and left and descent the other side (the one sloping left in the picture). Stay close to the edge. After several hundred feet down, look for a shorter couloir (which is also visible from the approach to Feather Peak) coming down from I believe Royce Peak(?). That couloir is short and about 35-40 degrees steep and can be downclimbed back to the basin you started your climb from. The descent is not complicated at all, just look for the shorter (descent) couloir while you are approaching Feather Peak.

You guys are great; thanks for pic and info. Unfortunately, since I have been down with some gastro issues I'm thinking the approach and descent will be too much for me with a high of 26 degrees and 10 hours of sunlight.
I'm not researching Gilbert's couloirs. Alois - you are the man! How do we get into Engram's instead of the North Couloir? :)

Deb, for Gilbert you need to ask the FA party (Al Fowler) about the Engram and RJ Secor about the North Couloir...If you ask me, they just might be one and the same gully(?)
