Humphreys Peak conditions?

Postby ynpsteve » Fri Oct 07, 2011 5:49 pm

Looking for some beta regarding Humphreys Peak... snow on the mountain? conditions (probable conditions) of the Weatherford Trail? I live in Glendale and was planning a climb via the Weatherford Trail tomorrow (10-8). Any information from locals in the area would be much appreciated. Thanks.

There definately is snow up there, was going to take a picture of it this morning but by the time I got to a good perspective the dawn light had moved on . It snowed yesterday 10/6, and they said it may snow a bit today. They were predicting 6" up there and it looks like there easily could be that. I would say the snow level is around 8000ft.

Though I am no longer in Flagstaff, I can tell you from past experience that you will likely face mud down low (on Saturday ) coming up the the south face, and probably 6 to 12 inches of snow depending on aspect, wind, and shade. It will be rocky above treeline in most places, but there may also be some decent drifts for the storm size. It will be a beautiful hike, but I recommend against snowshoes or any other winter device. Trekking poles and water proof boots are about it.

Just returned from Flag, where it was snowing.

So, that puts the snow level at 6,910 feet. The Peaks were completely obscured in clouds, and the "college kids" were showing off their winter wear ..

Hard to see right now, but it looks like the snow line is pretty far down

Yes, the OP is asking about Humphrey's Peak, not Mount Humphrey. The poster is from Glendale, AZ and mentions the Weatherford Trail. The confused post probably got to this thread from the homepage and didn't see the forum was the SW forum.

Yes, I was inquiring about Humphreys Peak in northern Arizona (near Flagstaff). Thank you to all the respondents. Since I'm new to AZ my follow-up question is whether the snow that recently fell on Humphreys might melt off in the next few weeks or if it's there to stay until next spring/summer? I know in Colorado once the snow hits the upper elevations it's there to stay. Same with snowfall on Humphreys Peak? Obviously any possible melt off would be dependent on the weather so I guess I'm asking if that's a "normal" possibility at this time of year? Thanks again!

I'll let "Lionel" answer, being that he's better at bare-bone statistics, charts and graphs ..

If you ask me, think it ALL depends on the Snow Gods ..

While it is unlikely all of it will melt off in the coming week, the hiking the trail should be fine in a week or so. The trail gets so much use, that it will be packed down, mud and snow, or gone by next. A warm up is coming, and the Peaks don't seem to really hold snow until after mid-November. What remains will probably be in shady spots and in drifts.

I'm planning on climbing Humphreys this Tuesday or Wednesday (Oct 25th or 26th). Has there been any additional snow on the mountain since earlier in the month? The weather forecast for the Flagstaff area looks mild this week so I'm hoping for good hiking/climbing conditions. I'd appreciate any condition updates that locals in the Flag area would care to share. I'm still planning on climbing via the Weatherford Trail. Thanks!

I don't live in Flag, but I was up there last week visiting friends, and the only snow remaining was on the top 1/3 of Humphreys and Agassiz.

Don't predict you're have a problem with snow, buddy.

I was in Flag on Friday. Looked mostly snow free. Might be some in the trees.
