Hey everyone. I'll be down in Arizona at the end of January and was considering heading up Humphreys Peak. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge that they would like to share about Humphreys this time of year? What is the snow situation typically like?

Too early to know snow conditions. Check Snowbowl's reports. Once they get over a 30" base, that route is normally usable. If too thin, you can hike the trail. Humphrey is a nice one for winter. Pretty easy and fun.

Be up on the snow report. If they get a lot of snow, you would need snowshoes to leave the slopes. Tried Humphrey's in Dec. of 07 about 2 days after it received 30 inches or so of snow. As soon as you got off the ski slopes, it was all post holing to about mid thigh.

I agree with gwave47, check the snow condition and bring your snowshoes just in case, I didn't bring mine.

Also be careful about route finding - sometimes in winter you will be the only one in the mountain and trails are non-existent above treeline, so know where you came out of treeline is essential.

It also gets very windy up there.

Unless substantial snow is dumped, over 24", you'll want to do the trail, not the off trail route here. Frankly, it's dangerous and a little irresponsible to do this one with snow like this. You don't want to break a leg in the rocks, and the limited alpine veg prefers not to be trampled by hikers in any season.

The ski area had to close their 2 lower ski runs due to lack of snow, so watch their reports. These are from the 2nd, and they just closed. In other words, there is even less than in these photos.

Not hiking Humphrey, but I'm curious if anyone else has recently, and they have either some comments on trail/ mountain conditions, or some photos to share.
