July weather is typically moderate with afternoon thunderstorms. Crisp, cool mornings with warm afternoon thunderstorms possible. Comfortable daytime temperatures, and can sometimes be windy.

Hope that helps

I'd worry about the skeeters more than the weather.

July is a great month in the Sierra for donating blood to the mosquitoes :) I'd bring a headnet and deet, regardless of which shelter.

I like bivies for short trips where rain is unlikely. In July on a longer trip you can pretty much count on thunderstorms during the afternoon, though they often go in cycles and if you time it right maybe you'll get lucky.

The ultralight way would be to learn how to pitch a tarp, but if you can't do that then a tent would probably be the most comfortable option. I enjoy waiting out a good thunderstorm in the mountains, reminds me of the big storms we'd get back east.

It never rains at night so doesn't affect your shelter choice. Only briefly in the afternoon if at all. Mostly sunny.

I've most definitely seen it rain and storm at night in the Sierra during the summertime. It is unusual, but it happens.

Take a tent and bring some Ben's 98% DEET. You'll be glad you did.

Definitely 98% DEET and No-seeum nets for your heads!! Don't eat any bananas...those suckers love blood laced with banana for some reason. Get you a horse-tail wisk too, beats swinging your entire arm to swat the little bastards. :o

Maybe you just like to argue. But if you are really worried about rain in the Sierra at night then you are extremely paranoid.
