kuna crest in winter - gear needed?

by jareds » Tue Feb 26, 2013 10:20 pm

skiing from mammoth to tioga pass end of march.

was recently told that kuna crest requires axe/crampons and a hand line - all other info i've heard says you'd be fine just booting up / skiing down w a whippet.

anyone have info on this?

thanks

Pray. For. Snow.

There is indeed one section that I know of for sure (near Kuna Peak) that might require some tech-y type gear, but I think it's mostly skiable.

East side (Parker/Mono Pass from the flanks of Gaylor Peak on President's Day weekend:

North side of Mts. Andrea Lawrence (left) and Donahue (right). I thought I had a shot from Lembert looking up the Lyell Fork, but I'm not finding it.

Rangers Rob and Laura Pilewski are posting weekly reports from their post in Tuolumne:

The report also lists the phone number of the TM Ranger Station, and, if they are working (power isn't always on) you can get in touch with them directly for more current conditions.

Pray. For. Snow.

Have a blast!!

i can't recall any area on kuna crest where you'd need rope.

unless you're bent on staying directly on the crest the entire time, then I'm not so sure
