i see theres some bluegrass fans in here...
what about newgrass? yonder mountain string band takes the cake, blueground undergrass isnt bad live, keller williams isnt bad on those long drives outa southern california, followed by some live jimmi hendrix, with a little parliment thrown in for good measure. those long hikes in to backcountry areas, metallica is on my ipod, for whom the bell tolls. social d and early bad religion, oh oh and...string cheese incident and some old dead bootlegs, music is the soundtrack of your life, and living in socal, i tend to go through quite a few discs on my way to get to the quality areas.

Did someone mention bluegrass???

A couple favorites...

Evolution — Hot Buttered Rum String Band

Seems that I've been here before
Mr. Two Peak climbing high
Testing the ice before each step, ensuring his route to the sky
Concentration focusing his rythm and his stride
Letting go of all his fears, nowhere left for him to hide

Evolution Valley took us for a ride
Climbing Darwin's Mountain, to the sky
I feel alive, I'm up so high

Eleven-Eight we left camp late
Council of peaks calls me along
Darwin glacier shines on me, my ice axe and crampons put on
Through the pass I flew right past
No mental notes did I make now
Summiting late in the day, but I had lost my way somehow

Evolution Valley took us for a ride
Climbing Darwin's Mountain, to the sky
I feel alive, I'm up so high

Flesh and Blood it weighs in now
Will he be denied?
Like once before with four men strong, they returned unsatisfied
How long must I wait below?
Gazing up so high
Until the man returns again, drank his fill of mountain pride

Evolution Valley took us for a ride
Climbing Darwin's Mountain, to the sky
I feel alive, I'm up so high

A Mountaineer Is Always Free - Tim O'Brien

I’m one of the few, proud to be standing
I walked up the pier from the coffin ships landing
My clothes were just rags, no use in this weather
But my back was strong, my hands tough as leather

I climbed up these hills till I came to the spot where I stand
I cleared these fields and I pulled up the stumps with my hands
No more a wanderer, no more a refugee
A mountaineer is always free

Took a Cherokee bride, she gave me five babies
I sang at the wakes, I cried at the weddings
I taught all my children the songs of my youth
To dance to the fiddle and practice the truth

I carried them up on my shoulders to where they could see
The whole world before them just so they would know what it means
No more a wanderer, no more a refugee
A mountaineer is always free

No kings and no landlords to treat us like beggars and thieves
There’s no one but God here to fear or to look down on me
No more a wanderer, no more a refugee
A mountaineer is always free

railroad earth - railroad earth

through this railroad earth
for whatever it’s worth
singin’ songs & stayin’ high

& you know i’ll be
where my heart feels free
& my thoughts are free to fly

oh mama, please don’t make me lie
i need my freedom, need my open sky

in yer socks & shirt & yer bed of dirt
with the midnight moon on high
& you know i’ve been
where the midnight wind
makes the soul & spirit cry

oh mama, please don’t ask me why
i need my freedom
i need my open sky

through this railroad earth
for whatever it’s worth
gettin’ ‘ long & gettin’ by
& you know i miss
every single kiss
as the years go rollin’ by

oh mama, aint it good to be alive
when you’re mountain-top
& feelin’ high

oh mama, aint it good to be alive
when you’re down & rollin’
free to ride

oh mama, please don’t make me lie

A great memory came back to me today--my partners and my first trip to the Sierra Nevada, and driving out of Bishop, "Skating Away" by Jethro Tull popped up on the radio. What a day ...

One of my favorites is Creedence Clearwater Revival. "Bad Moon Rising" really makes the miles fly by!

Completely off-topic, but did anyone see High Lonesome : the Story of Bluegrass Music (1994), a documentary about Bill Monroe and the evolution of the genre over the years ?

"You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban.

I tell you, everytime I hear that refrain of "You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains!" I feel like I'm at the top of Mt. Everest!
