Mt. Adams scouting 7-4-11

by philoparts » Tue Jul 05, 2011 4:56 am

The road up to Cold Springs is still blocked by snow about .75 from the gate, so an extra 2,25 miles on the approach. I went up to 7500' today just checking it out, I still haven't fully recovered from my McLoughlin climb yet. Snow is still pretty firm up high, mushy by mid day and melting fast lower, but still probably be end of the month before the road is open to Cold Springs. Plenty of blowdown besides the snow. Still a perfect day, I ran into easily a few dozen climbers and AT skiers today.

Good info. Thanks. Sounds like this is the time to go. . .
Also sounds a bit similar to last year's snowpack, though it wasn't as much as this years.

If you're planning a multi-day it would be great right now. A one day would be rough, I met 3 guys coming down who did a one day summit and they were on autopilot by Cold Springs. They were wiped out and didn't look like they were having fun anymore by that point.

Single days that long have that effect. I am doing a overnight this coming Sat-Sun so I suppose I can update early next week.

I'm coming up from Socal to visit my parents the last week in July and am hoping to climb the South Spur route of Adams with my dad. Ideally it would be a one day outing from the Cold Springs campground if possible.

What are conditions like on the approach to the South Spur route? Consolidated snow all the way up to the summit? Any major hazards on the route such as rock or icefall?

Thanks for your help!

Did it a week later due to weather. Road is clear and snow travel is pretty much 100% after a half mile or so.

Shit loads of cars. But the people seem spread enough you won't get real crowds. Snows getting soft!
