Tahquitz

I realize P&P is the official place for stuff like this, but since no one seems to use it:

Anyone want to go to Tahquitz sometime Thursday - Monday? I lead 5.9, follow delicate but not strenuous 5.10 (I'm a wuss), and am dying to do Open Book. I'd also like to practice on some slabs but am open to whatever you want to do. Would prefer to spend a night and climb two days, ...

where to take by two sons back packing in the Sierras

Our trail permit starting out of Devils Postpile area next week 6-15-10 won't do us any good because the road to the trailhead won't be open for another week. I'm looking for an alternate 4 or 5 day loop to take my boys. Does anyone have any suggestions (and photos) who are just getting back from somewhere, that isn't too, too snowy in the Sierras. I'm open to eastern or western Sierras.

Telescope Peak report: June 3-4, 2010

I hiked Telescope Peak on June 3-4. Here are the details in case anyone is interested...

In my 2WD car with 5-6 inches of ground clearance, I got to Thorndike Campground without a problem (no bottoming out). I tried to go to Mahogany Flat, but the road seemed much more rutted and rocky than I cared to negotiate. Hiked from Thorndike to Mahogany--it was only 30 min.

Hiked from Mahogany to Arcane Meadows and camped. ...

Burnside Road - near Lake Tahoe - Hawkins Peak - conditions?

I am organizing a trip to hike Hawkins Peak and Pickett Peak south of Lake Tahoe near Luther Pass.

We understand that Burnside Road is dirt Forest Service Road. We want to know the conditions.

1) Can a 2WD low-clearance vehicle make it up the road?
2) If so, how far up the road before it turns too rough?

Our plan is to drive up to Pickett Peak Road, about 3 miles up, and park. ...

Looking for ideas for June 9-13, 2010

My son, 18, and I have some free time and are heading out from the bay area on Wednesday evening 6-9 and back home Sunday 6-13.

I've asked him what he wants to do but all he says is "fun climbing." So, we are looking for something five.fun to do. I will lead 5.9 if I have to but prefer 5.7 and below especially since the kid doesn't lead and really hasn't climbed that much. ...

Mermorial Day Shasta Trip Report

My buddy Anthony and I climbed Shasta this past weekend. It was his first 14er and he summited on his first try. This was my 3rd time on the mountain-the first 2 attempts resulting in failure for various reasons not within my control: one trip a party member became ill with severe AMS and I had to solo-escort him and all his gear down, the other--a solo trip because my partner flaked last minute-- I ...
