The Beckoning Silence

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmjJBu0xiwc

"Joe Simpson has endured several brushes with death and has suffered the loss of many climbing friends in accidents which call into question the exhilarating, death-defying activity to which he has devoted his whole life. Never more alive than when most at risk, he has come to see an attempt on the Eiger, with its hooded, mile-high North Face, as the culmination of his climbing career.

In a narrative which takes the reader through ...

New Broad Peak Documentary (Trailer)

Hello fellow SPers!

Back in 2009 I went to Broad Peak in Pakistan and had a crazy adventure. Along the way I shot eight hours of video. I have condensed it down to 78 minutes in a documentary. I am still working on it a little but the trailer is below. It's two minutes that's worth your time, at least in my opinion.

Ski Bum Book

There is a new book about ski bums called In Search of Powder. Has anybody picked this up and heard about it? Looks like it might be interesting to people on this site. I found it on amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Search-Powder-Story-Americas-Disappearing/dp/0803228392/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1286381704&sr=1-1.

Your favourite weather?

I always thought I prefer sunny, warm weather to climb in - which indeed is nice, but I've started to realise that it's not the best weather.
Preferably not rainy - wet makes life so miserable, but foggy, cloudy, snowy is all fine. I enjoy being out in it.

It has a lot to do with how and what you climb, of course.

Any preferences?

SPers,

Many of you may have come to know Steph Abegg, night photography extraordinaire and a superb contributer to SP with her trip reports and articles.

Well, I have good news and bad news.

The good news is Steph is alive and intends to climb again.

The bad news is Steph took a serious fall when rock broke out beneath her on Vesper Peak. She's had major surgery, narrowly missing having her foot amputated. I'm ...

Climbing Safe

A few recent incidences have made me refocus on safety. I’ve noticed that the longer I climb the more lax I am when it comes to double checking my partners to make sure they are truly ready. It’s pretty scary when you think back to recent events and realize that you’ve been in less than desirable predicaments because you simply didn’t take the time to communicate with your partner before you start a climb. Possibly ...
