Ptarmigan Traverse, July 17-21 2015

Thought I would give a quick conditions update. Last time I did this was about five years ago with substantial more snow. This time quite the opposite. Personal preferrence would be for more snow rather than less.

Cache Col: straight forward, we didnt rope up but had axes and crampons. Little move from snow to rock at top, no big deal. Snow free from col to just below red ledge.

Red Ledge: healthy patch of ...

Ptarmigan Traverse Transportation

I am looking to plan a trip through the Ptarmigan Traverse in June or July of next year. I will be going with two other people, and all of us will be 19. This presents a problem in that we won't really have the money to rent a car for that long with the added fees for renting under 25 (and we certainly don't want to rent two). Can anyone provide some advice as to ...

You now have four less excuses for ever getting lost on most climbs in Oregon or Washington.
The Mazamas are a Portland Oregon based mountaineering and hiking organization.
On the Mazamas website you can now find, for over 50 of the most popular NW climbing routes:

1) pdf maps with the route redlined, 2) GPX track files for your GPS or smartphone 3) KML Google Earth files, and 4) exact latitude longitude ...

ALpine Lakes/Scottish Lakes Area

I have a trip to the Scottish Lakes High Camp coming up the first week of august. I'm trying to find some good climbs within a reasonable distance (probably 5 mile approach max) that are alpine climbs in the low 5th class range. I'll most likely be soloing, although if it's easy enough I might get someone to let me drag them up with a rope. I've been looking for stuff in the Larch Lake ...

Mount Rainier Climb

Fellow Climbers!
I have a few noob questions, that I was hoping to get some answers to. Last year I hiked the PCT, and the most enjoyable part was climbing the mountains. Ever since then , all I've wanted to do is climb more mountains. I love it. I want to get into more high alpine climbing, and the mountain closest to me would be Mount Rainier. So, I want to summit Mount Rainier, but ...

Three Sisters Wilderness question: Green Lakes to Camp Lake

Hey all,

My wife are heading out on a two night trip through the Three Sisters Wilderness. We want to start from Green Lakes Trailhead and end at Pole Creek Trailhead, and bag a peak (South or Middle) sometime between the two. We have people to pick us up in the Pole Creek side.

I thought the Green Lakes trail went pretty much directly north, but pulling up my map, I see it heads northeast ...

GOAT ROCKS: Hike Old Snowy or Hawkeye Point Next Week?

Please give us your advice on the following -

On the week of June 7, 2015, two of us are hiking the Goat Rocks wilderness area. We would like to bag a few scenic peaks and we've narrowed it down to Hawkeye Peak or Old Snowy.

We have only standard hiking gear. We do not have ice axe, crampons or helmets. Please keep that in mind. That is why we passed up several other Goat ...

Mt. Hood- Sunshine Route condition

Planning to attempt Mt. Hood via the Sunshine/Eliot Glacier route this coming weekend (June 6). Anyone been on this recently? Wondering two things:
1- I am planning to day trip this from Tilly Jane (Ranger District says road is open all the way). Is a day trip standard procedure on this route? Does anyone camp on the mountain?
2- Pertaining to snow conditions: not planning to bring any floatation...hope I won't be postholing??

Thanks for ...

Mt Adams Summit...June 6, 7 & 8...partner(s) wanted

Looking to summit Adams a 4th time this coming weekend...my usual climbing partner backed out last minute and I'm still looking to go. My summit style is a 3 day casual climb. Camp at the South summit trailhead Fri. night, lunch counter or sunrise camp on Saturday, summit on Sunday, off mountain and home on Monday. I've done the 2 day up and down and would be willing for that option if no one cares ...
