Ptarmigan Traverse

Couple of questions for those of you with experience with the Ptarmigan Traverse. My daughter has finally expressed an interest in going mountaineering and we have tentative plans to do the traverse North to South around the third week of July this year. A little background might be in order, so that responses are appropriate. I have been mountaineering and rock climbing for over forty years including several seasons guiding both rock and mountain routes. ...

Mount Adams Summit Mount Adams Summit

Hey guys! I'm thinking about climbing up Mount Adams with a friend this weekend. Anyone know about the current conditions? The national weather/avalanche forecast said there is increased danger.... Would I be ok with just iceaxe/crampons or is there enough powder where snowshoes would be required? Thanks!!

Mount Hood

I've done summer and winter hiking and some light mountaineering here in the Adirondacks and a buddy and I have talked about a road trip to Portland. Being less than 2 hours away, and me being drawn to the mountains, Mount Hood obviously has a lot of pull. Just fit the sake of considering it, I was wondering about Mount Hood in June-August. I am somewhat familiar of the South Side Route and plently of ...

Killen Creek TH access and rote conditions in 2015

I wonder when the access to Killen Creek TH might become available this year (from both sides). Is there any particular website with roads and routes condition updates related to Mt Adams area? I’m planning a trip to the Cascades in June/July preferably sooner than later.

USFS finally publishes GIS hiking trail data

Good News: The USFS has at long last published data for hiking trails on their GIS server. GIS = Geographical Information System. Displaying this hiking trail data directly from the USFS GIS server has the following advantages:
* This is the same GIS hiking trail data that the Forest Service’s own Interactive Visitor Map displays. http://www.fs.fed.us/ivm/
* Only enough data is downloaded to fill your screen. This is much ...

found a piece of navigational gear on Diamond Peak ...

Was hiking around Diamond Peak last Sunday and came across a nice piece of navigational gear. If you lost something along those lines and can tell me about where on the mountain (what approach) and what your missing piece of gear is, I will strive to get it back to you.

Too early for Jeff?

We're having some insanely nice weather... my climbing partner is planning a trip up Mt. Jefferson in mid-March (Pamela Lake Route).

I don't see anyone signing the climber's log yet this season, and I hear about the ice and rime on the summit pinnacle. On the other hand, the traverse probably has a lot of cover, and maybe the nice weather will make the pinnacle less rimey.

Anyone have any recommendations? I was suggesting Hood, ...

North Cascades climbs in September

I will visit the North Cascades area around the middle of September and was planning to do some of the classical climbs there, possibly with a guide since I will travel on my own.

What are the climbs usually still in condition at that time of the year? do you have a guiding service to suggest?
I have some mountaineering experience in the Alps (up to PD+/AD routes), though often with a mountain guide, and ...
