I'm actually very tempted to head over for a long day sometime between Christmas and New Year. I could get a train into Bangor and bus over to Capel Curig or Llanberis. I'll give you an answer at the weekend or early next week!

Like i said I'm desperate for climbing partners on some routes :-)
Since you don't have a huge amount of experience Crib Coch North ridge if there is enough snow will be an awesome experience for you as a first winter/snow climb

Is there any way you have/can rent crampons?

Got a second ice axe in my car if you don't have one ...

BTW: if you come, let me know in time and i'll pick you up in bangor ... Will send you my brittish phonenumber if we have planned something ...

Is the North Ridge substantially harder than the East Ridge?

Also, would we be roped/do I need a harness?

I'll look into the options for travel and crampon rental. I don't think I can really afford to buy them at the moment

North ridge is in my opinion a walk up while the east ridge is a scramble ... So easier than the east ridge for sure but i think it would be a bad idea to drag you up the east ridge if you ain't used to winter

Won't be too expensive to rent them probably ...

Harness is needed but i might have a second one if you have tiny legs lol :-) but you probably will be packed too hard so will be too tight though i might be able to borrow a second one ... Best is to rope up in winter though i would do it solo if i don't find a partner ...

Another question has come up after I talked to people at my climbing club. I mentioned winter climbing in Snowdon and they asked what type of crampons I was going to take. Obviously I answered that I don't know and they explained that there are two grades of crampon, C1's and C2's which are more heavy duty, and that while C1's should attach to any boot, C2's are designed to go with proper mountaineering boots.

I have a pair of Scarpa Infinity GTX's which have been great for long distance trekking, hill-walking and scrambling so far. What type of crampons would we need, and might there be problems with compatability with my boots? I can't afford the expense of buying mountaineering boots now, and I'll probably pull out if it is a problem

Always take your boots to the shop where you rent/buy your crampons ...
Even in the C1 or C2 there are differences so best advice is to take your boots to make sure!

Checked last weather report and snow is knee deep :-)

Turns out my boots aren't compatible with crampons. Plas y Brenin is closed between Christmas and New Year. I've emailed a rental place in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, if they're also closed then I won't be able to come along

I've heard that the flexy soles can cause crampons to break (mine are quite flexy). Should be alright for a day's walking!

Are you going to be able to report back when you're out there or are you in internet isolation?
